My Dad smacked me in the face years ago when his co worker was showing him a car he just bought and I asked him "how much did that cost?".  I Was told that it is rude to ask someone that and I still believe it!  So now you have the "whole story"  KERN DOG. :nana:

What did your brother pay for the car?

My usual answer to this question is,  "A lot of beer and pizza".    The answer I would prefer to give is substantially less polite.    I am surprised how often this question is asked,  particularly by people I don't know.

XH29N0G

Have to admit, I'm curious too but for no defensible reason.  For now I'll just imagine it is what this guy would tell me.

A very nice car.  Thanks for posting.

Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

I don't see where it matters.  If the seller is happy with the price, that's all that matters.

what if the seller is clueless about the value
That is the fault of the seller.  An honest buyer with a conscience might let the seller know that it is worth more by making an offer that more reflects the actual value, but it's not necessary.  It's still on the seller to know what he's selling.

I agree with you.   However,  morally and ethically things change when your dealing with someone who's well into thier "golden years".    In this case, it's sounds like the OP did the right thing.

It's your business graybo if you want to disclose the price you guys paid for it.   If you do, great.  If you don't, that's fine too.   Of course people are curious myself included but I understand and respect your rights to privacy.   No big deal.
Either way, keep in and enjoy it or sell it for a good profit and use that to get a better car you guys want.    Nothing wrong with that in any way at at.

Wow what a great find. The original owner really kept it nice over the years. Someone looks to be getting a great car. Thanks for posting and please keep the pics coming...more of everything, trunk, engine room, interior etc...

I don't think there is anything wrong with asking how much something was bought for...it is rude to keep asking more than once....if he wanted to share the number he would have. Move on.

As far as WIW...I would say the first number would at the very least start with a 4.

Thanks again,
Dave

Absolutely.   Asking once isn't rude when it comes to a car or something.
Asking about personal finances, settlements, inheritance and those lines is rude.

That's about what I'm thinking too. Maybe more if it were a different color.   I agree with the ethical dilemma especially dealing with someone in their Golden years. I came across a 2dr 62 Dart once in a really old ladies driveway. DING-DONG.

Original owner...I asked her about it, she said it hadn't run in a long time. I asked if I could mess with it and if she would possibly sell it. First she joked "get in line!" but then she said she probably would sell it.

I got working on it while my wife chatted with her in her house. I got it going....It still would need brakes etc...but it was running OK. She was really happy and made me a sandwich !   :icon_smile_big:

So then it came down to $$.  Back then it was maybe worth $7000 to someone who liked Exner cars (like me), and I told her so... But I was also like 23 years old and 7 grand was a ton of money at the time. So she says what can you give me for it? I said I could scrape up $3000, that was really all I had....but I could keep giving her money when I could. She said no, she wanted me to have it for $3000 but if I sold it, I would split profit with her. great !

Then she started reminiscing about driving that car when she was young with her friends, and all the good times they had in it. She had a bunch of cool old pictures of it she showed us, and she couldn't let it go after all. She loved that car....truly.  It was bittersweet...sort of.   :icon_smile_big:

Anyhoooo.... I think there are ways to get a good deal on something and work it out where everyone is happy and no one gets taken advantage of.

^^ :2thumbs:I think there comes a time for most of us when money is no longer driving the bus.  If one turns everything they have into money it may not be such a good way to remember the life that those things represent.--I'm just thinking about crj1968"s post.

I openly invite you to try the same thing to me.  You want to brag about the car here and elsewhere then play like a politician when people want to know more. You can't have it both ways, dude.

Amen, eventually it all comes down to the memories...I've gone through a lot of cars, but now that my kids are older I want to make some memories with the ones I have and hold onto them and pass them down.
I also have a 6 year old. I'm a little older than most to have a 6 year old son, but imagine the memories he could have of the Charger when his is nearly (cough) 50 like me.    :coolgleamA:

What will people think of our cars 45 years from now?

Awesome car! I love 68 Coronets but have never owned one. And I love 4-speeds. I drive too much to own anything that really shouldn't be driven though...

I can't believe a third of this thread is about money. I've owned nearly 40 cars in my life and the only one I've ever publicly discussed price on is my 2015 Scat Pack Charger. I have people at shows often comment on how much a car may be worth but I certainly don't answer with the exact amount I paid. I may discuss my purchase price with the next buyer (heck, it's on the title so I can't hide it) or personal friends when trying to figure out if I made a reasonable deal or when it finally does come time to sell and I need to pick a price.

:2thumbs:  Their were a bunch of questions and one of them is "what's it worth". I read the post over a few times and am left with what I see as the intent.
Would doing anything to this car help or hinder it as being a great example of a survivor?  If some things should or need to be done what are they?

I would have the same questions if I had that car. ---What are the opinions of the readers of this forum?

There is little question about money with these things. Money is the gauge we all understand and is used to quantify our opinions. We have no easy way to identify this car for everyone other than the dollar value. :shruggy:---I really like coronets so my thoughts may be different then one that is not moved by them and just want's to maximize an investment and move on. :Twocents:

I can easily understand that a third of this thread is about money. It's the language we speak
I also get the comments about asking what we paid for something as being a cultural taboo. :slap: (I wonder where that taboo came from :scratchchin:).

When we are talking about this hobby the most asked question is WIW.  We continue to struggle with it because selling prices are hard to come by.

BTW I bought my 69 Hemi coronet 4sp car (less than 50K miles) for $900.  :nana:

birdsandbees

And I bought a 383 magnum x 4 gear 1969 'Bee, numbers matching original car, with less than 15,000 original miles for under $3200 (albeit in 1980 from my father). Also an all panel (Except left front fender) original 'Bird with 52,000 miles for $24K Cdn.. again albeit in 1989.

I was starting to wonder why such pressure to ask what his brother paid for it, to the point it looked like jilted buyers that got beat to the barn, but then realized as others have said he did ask "WIWorth". Maybe his brother won't tell him either...  :yesnod:

Gorgeous car no mater if he tells or not, wish I could find a few of those current day.

Hmm :scratchchin:---I bought a 383 4sp Bee new for $3800.  It had 11,000 miles on it when I gave it back to the finance co.

Kern Dog

I never asked the Op what his own personal finances are. I have built houses, fantastic, HUGE houses and while I wondered what the owners did for work, I never asked.  I understand social decorum. I also know that when dealing with what I consider peers in the hobby, mainly other people that buy and enjoy classic cars, the Actual price paid for the car goes a long way toward explaining its value. This helps the hobby by establishing a guideline for other cars that are waiting to be discovered.
To take the time to start a thread like this one, (Here and on Moparts, maybe elsewhere too) then put up a wall when people want to know more information, this just smacks of arrogance and bragging.
Look at me! Look at Me!  I scored on this car and you didn't! Look at what I did!

The OP is being selfish. If he wanted to be "hush-hush" about the car, he should have never posted about it.

ws23rt

I'm with kern dog ^^ ---- In this case the op is talking about a car his brother bought. He may feel obliged to not speak for his brother on the price paid. Or he might not know. :shruggy:

I also agree that the posting is more of a sharing a cool find and looking for how we feel about it than a bottom line value.--Sharing is good --I like seeing this stuff.

Aside this case---We all would be better served if we shared the prices for sellers and buyers.  Let's get over the block that bogs down our understanding of the current market.

On this same line of discussion---I am one of those that recently bought a hellcat challenger. I looked for over a year to find a dealer that would sell for msrp.
So I found one and that means everyone knows how much I paid. However in my searching for that long year I've encountered many new owners that brag and show their cars. Very few mention how much they paid. :D  We also know that most were marked up a lot. :slap: and were sold. :scratchchin:
Do we have some shame happening? :scratchchin:  To admit to spending too much could reveal more than just being able to afford it. :shruggy:

It should not be a secret. :2thumbs:  We all could find and sell our cars with greater comfort without the shame stigma of losing a few potential dollars.
I remember your car and your selling adventure Leon.  A good example of how tough the market is for all involved.
