my rebuilt 440 leaks oil bad by the oil filter/pump

  I have tightened up everything and even tried a different oil filter.  It leaks bad.  Any ideas

I dont think anyone thinks you are a moron - it was just a simple obvious suggestion that even the experts can overlook at times. I'm not a mechanic but I would look at a cracked housing or something as simple as a wrong filter, but it sounds like you have checked that already. Someone with more experience will probably offer you some suggestions. Good luck!

My new pump was leaking on my rebuilt 440 also and it was a bad o ring on the oil pump shaft. It can sometimes be hard to tell where the leak is. I put the car on a hoist cleaned everything up and started it to find out it was coming from the pump itself. I doubt the filter is the problem if you have tried two.

  Guess what.  I found the problem and fixed it.  Problem was that this new oil pump had a bad casting/mold.  It had two small pin holes in the housing and it was weeping out.  The Oil Pump itself is good put it had two-parts.  I just traded housings.
