I have been reading that the fifth digit on the vin tag is the engine size but I do not see the that on my vin tag. I shows a 8 for 1968. Am I reading this wrong ? Thanks

BLK 68 R/T

Hello and welcome. In 68 the engine code is listed differently than the 69-70 tags, lynch road cars are even different yet. In 68 the code 83 is for a 440 4 barrel HP engine. The VIN on your dash should list XS29L8XXXXXXX, with the L being the engine code for 440.

Yes you are reading it wrong.

That is your fender tag, not your VIN tag. Your VIN tag is the tag on the driver's side of the dash.

The fender tag tells paint, trim and some of the options on the car that required a modification to the body.
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

a few on-line decoder "pet peeves":

TIRES: F70x14 Red Side Wall (Goodyear SPEEDWAYs), Steel Belted didn't exist for production cars until some time in the '70s
SCHEDULED PRODUCTION DATE: January 10, 1968

& the VIN would be XS29L8Bxxxxxx - as they didn't start building Chargers in St. Louis "G" until March of '68.

& NO RADIO :coolgleamA:

I do have a radio in car, reverberator system in back with button to the right of radio, does fender tag show this?

Nwcharger

I don't see a radio on your tag. Should be on the upper case ABC options on the tag. There sound be something under the R on the tag.

There is NO radio "R/0,1,2 (420, 421, 422)" or rear speaker "P/6 (426)" shown on your fender tag, they would've been added after the factory built the car.

There was NO "reverberator" factory available on a '68 B-body.

Great info, thank you!

but, I just noticed .....

the factory available '68 Charger radios: 420 - AM w/8-track stereo, 421 - AM Music Master radio 2 watts, 422 - AM Astrophonic radio 5-1/2 watts (* NO factory AM/FM radio was available in a '68 b-body)
& your car appears to have an ACCESSORY (dealer installed) '68 b-body AM/FM radio with the Pentastar above the AM/FM indicator
I'd bet the original owner of your car ordered it with the AM/FM & the intelligent salesman knew they could order & install the radio/reverberator/rear speaker/antennae/etc. that the customer wanted.  :2thumbs: check the date on the radio's paper tag if you have a chance.

the factory '69 unit has "CHRYSLER CORP" on the face of it

the '68 ACCESSORY Catalog is pictured online at  http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/1968AccessoriesCatalog-01.shtml  :2thumbs:

Here is the paper work that I have that came with the car.
