What cam would you use?

I know Ive asked before, but my machine shop guy ordered the wrong cam, and now the one I was going to get is most likely going to be discontinued.  First off, its a 383 edelbrock torker single plane intake (600cfm carb just for break in) 800cfm carb otherwise, 1 3/4 headers with 2.25 exhaust, forged trw (speedpro pistons) estimated 9:25:1-9:5:1 compression ratio, 26 inch tires, 3.23 rear (which I am hoping to change to 3.55's by august, but I may not if I find the right cam for the 3.23's) and 727 has a mild shift kit, with a 2800rpm stall.

I was thinking of going with something around a 224/234 duration, or close to the stock high performance cam as everyone seems to think anything bigger than this is too much for this engine.  It is street driven at least a couple times a week, but I am looking for that special cam for my setup that will put a REALLY BIG smile on my face.  I am sure you guys know what I mean.  I am not really that concerned with fuel economy, as it sucks no matter what.  I do like the lopey idle over a smooth idle also.  With my setup I am guessing the rpm should be limited to somewhere around 6k since I drive on the street, but the headers, intake and future carb should be able to handle a small amount more I would think.  Anyway any ideas? Cause when I start looking, a comp cam that sound good seems to much when compared to say a crane, which seems to similar, but more expensive to the mp stock cam...basically its all the same to me, I know the basic duration I need, but I can't pinpoint it???

I would consider an Engle K56 and grind it on a 110 CL or 108 CL if you really want a real good lope. I just heard a sound clip of Chris's 440 with this cam and it sounds great.

I have a K56/K58 110CL split grind in my 440 that has a 224/230 duration @0.050 and it comes on strong at around 2200 rpm and pulls all the way up to 6000rpm. With a smaller 383 it should work good because you have the single plane intake, headers, and 2800 stall. Switching to 3.55 gears would be better for that cam though but, with 26" tires I bet you would still be alright with 3.23's

I did read the other post you started, and was curious about how the summit cam would sound...does anyone know what idle would be like? its a 224/234 w/a 465/488 lift heres a link

I don't have any experience with Summit cams.  From the specs it has a 114 CL so it will have broader powerband and a milder idle. What kind of idle do you want? That one might not put the smile on your face. For a "rough" idle I would look for something with a 110 or 108 CL. My 440 has a decent idle with a 110CL but, you do know it is not stock.

If you look at the Mopar line of cams you can see they have two versions of the 284/484 cam. One is on a 108CL and I think the other is 112CL and claims better driveability.

with headers you want to have the cl in the 110 range , 112-114 works better with less effcient exhaust , I agree , a K 56 or even the K58 will work great with what you have

You're good to ~.510 lift before you run into retainer to guide clearance issues.  :yesnod:

ive ran that cam in my 440 for 2 seasons, pretty decent low end power, runs out of breath about 5grand,has a little lope in the 440 with headers, but will be a little lumpier in a 383 because of the smaller displacement
