Sure-grip rebuild or not

How do you know when a clutch style sure-grip needs rebuilt? Is there a test? (other than a burnout..lol)

Having my 741 8.75 rebuilt soon and going down from 3.91's to 3.55 for lower rpms..not sure what history my sure grip has..it could have been rebuilt in the past or could be an original piece.

My gears are howling between 25-60mph..does it all the time, whether I'm accelerating or letting off or coasting.

You could put a pair of axles in it & do a breakaway torque test...

Basically you would lock one axle & see how much torque is required to cause the other axle to turn, if it'll hold 150 ft. lbs. without turning it's deemed to be good. Pic below shows the axle stub I machined to perform the test.

My 74 has an 8.25 Sure-Grip, and it thunks and bangs like a locker. Has for 8 years. But will still fry both hides any time i ask, and inside it looks brand new. I've decided to not question this at all. :smilielol:

My new engine is likely going to turn it to jello anyway, so i'm not TOO worried about it.  :2thumbs:
