I thought I'd try the prices with a local guy who does gauge restoration before sending it off somewhere. So he finally calls me today after having my cluster for a month and says he could do it for $1,200. I knew he was probably going to be high, I just didn't think he'd be high in more ways than one. I told him I would head out to his house in the next few days to retrieve my gauge cluster. Thanks but no thanks.

Whooa.... Did he need to buy a new house on you?  That is about double what some others will charge.

If you have a tach you are having redone at that price that's not bad, if not you can do better.
Is that all gauges and face plates? or just gauges?

No tach in my cluster, just a clock. That quote is basically for repairing two of the small gauges, new faces, polishing the plastic and repairing some broken pins on the back (as well as all the general clean-up type stuff they all do).

I think you'll see all the parts and services rise dramatically soon.  It's a trickle down from the insanity of auction fever.  Did you see in MCG where the guy was asking what a fair price was for the old Hemi in his non matching derelict Road Runner?  He had been in contact with the guy who had the 70 Hemi Cuda that was the original car for the engine he had.  Kudos to him for wanting to be fair but the whole reason he questioned his price in the first place was because he knew once he made the Hemi Cuda a numbers matching car, it was going to be worth enormously more.

True, but this guy doesn't do many Mopar items and I think his price reflects that. I'm sure I could get it done for less than $800 through one of the businesses that handle these en masse, such as Auto Instruments. Maybe not but I bet so.

I have heard that Gentry at AutoInstruments would charge around $700.00 - $800.00 USD to redo the whole cluster.  Depending of course on what you need done (plating etc.).  I have been stashing my US dollars away and hoping to have it done later this Spring or early in the Summer.

There are a couple of threads on the site where guys have posted what they paid and photos of the results.  Stuff looks good.

The way prices are outpacing my income I'm sure I'll be doing a lot of things myself from now on, or getting help from friends. But I obviously can't do vacuum plating at home unless I wrap the bezel in aluminum foil and put it in the oven. :P

That sounds like a bargain.  In 2002 I had a complete dash restoration done sandblasting, painting, silkscreening, calibrating, etc for $1600.  I just took another 69 charger dash in for an estimate for restoration this time they gave me a price of $4,300+ WOW.

Bull,
   Are you sure that the guy knows that cluster came out of a 68 Charger? Since that cluster looks alot like the cluster that came out of the Apollo 12 Lunar Landing Module, he could be charging you accordingly. Nasa resto's always cost more. That mistake happens all the time, just double check when you go pick it up  :icon_smile_big:  :icon_smile_big:  :icon_smile_big:

Actually it seems like Charger gauge clusters are more valuable than any old historical NASA junk these days.

Oh    My    God.    And I was going to try to find out how much it would be to put a tick toch tach in my 72 cluster with a cleaning up of the rest of the gauges. I think it would be cheaper to go with AutoMeter. Hell, Im thinking SUNPRO at this point!!  Guess you can't really go low buck with mopar huh?
