I had one just like it!

I know this subject has been beat to death, but, anyway.....  Went on probably the last cruise of the season today.  Other than thumbs ups on the road, we had to stop three times for various reasons.  At each stop we were approached by various folks.  It amazed me that all three folks had an identical yellow '68 RT back in the day.  I know it's a form of flattery, but why not just say you love the car?

Some people acquire memories from places other than the world they lived in.
I've heard the same thing many times and think it is just a way to communicate and appreciate.
People lie for every reason. :slap:
I see it as a complement every time I hear the lie.---Human nature is what it is.--

Think memories are fleeting, there just weren't that many pale yellow chargers sold (y2 or y3) up until the last few years, they were never seen, last few years y2's and y3s seem to be popping out of the woodwork. I think most admirers meant to say they had a charger of the same year and probably not of the same color.  When I got mine in the 70s never saw one the same color.

Memories are fleeting. Also what we see and remember has much to do with the timing and place that imprints the memory.
I recall when I got my first VW bug for $50. It was good transport but what sticks with me (in regard to this topic) is I all of a sudden saw a VW on every street wherever I went.
They were there all along but I never saw them before I had one.

Yes, it could just as easily have been black or green or a Road Runner or even an Ambassador.  They know they had an American a long time ago.  Probably.
But it is meant as a way to connect and compliment.

:2thumbs: That's the way I see it. Striking a conversation with a stranger is what they are doing and the car is a great conversation starter.

The next time a guy tries to talk to me when I'm in my Charger, I'll stop, get out and kick the guys ass. Screw him for trying to talk to me...

I once had a guy insist the Green Charger I was in, was his car from back in the day. His car was a 383, and when I explained mine was a numbers matching 440, 4-spd, he insisted someone had changed the engine. The numbers matching thing didn't click. I gave up and walked off.

It never ends. -- I met a guy locally at a gas stop. I was in my b5 challenger hellcat. He said he met me before a few weeks ago. --This is not true.-- Another guy talked to me at a cruise in and told me I was the only one in the area with a car like that. :scratchchin: He explained where he saw me and the car. --This is also not true--
Hmm at some point I may meet someone that remembers things as they happen. :shruggy: The enthusiasm some have is hard to dismiss and I generally like to let them enjoy themselves. Cars are fun

At the gas station with my 72 a guy compliments me on the car and then says he had one just like it back in the day, his was a 68  :ahum:

One more, I'm out with my 71 SE and a guy asks where my headlights are.  I tell him about the headlight covers and happen to mention that I usually get questions about the hidden wiper blades.  He replies "yeah they are tucked under the hood, I know all about those cars"

Fueling up our hot rods is one of the joys of owning an old muscle car.   ;)

My favorite was a clerk at a Texaco station that came, almost running, to tell me he had one just like it except it had a Muncie rock crusher instead but it was identical.

Another time I took my purple car to a Dr. appointment since he wanted to see it.  A security guard was waiting for us when we came out of the office ( hospital ).  He escorts us to my car & there's a guy waiting.  He asks if I have the title & wants to see it, yada, yada.  Who in their right mind carries a title with them?  Guy says his friend had one just like it & sold it but never got all the money.  My Dr. says I better call the police since this guy was basically harassing me.
Guy says, "oh yeah, let's call a tow truck right away too."

Guy then says, "this isn't the original color, you repainted it."  I tell him it's an original 440 car but has been painted it's factory color, purple, since it's birth.
Shortly after, he was apologizing profusely.

I leave a key in the trunk lock all the time & it was missing, no bigge.  But I know he took it.

My wife called the hospital to question & hope they got a name, she's worked there since '94.  They basically said to tell me not to bring the car to the hospital anymore because they have no control over something like that happening.

Oddly enough, I got this comment the other day while filling up, which is not something I'd expect to hear coming from someone in my country.
I said, Really? He said, Back in Canada.
Sounds plausible I guess, although I didn't hear an accent.
He didn't stop to chat, so I took it at face value.

Eh, they're being friendly.  The other end of that is they could be trying to vandalize the car, stab you, or set your groceries on fire.  I'll take the misguided compliment anytime...

Like the OP, I also took a ride Friday AM.   I had one very polite, "my brother had an R/T".
But, even out in BFE, I ran into several classics.  Lots of "maybe" last rides that morning.
