If thats what the pushrod looked like, i wonder how bad the lifters are.....

Thx
I just ordered a case of the oil.  I'll post the results if I can remember when I check the new rod after a thousand miles on the Brad Penn.
I hope I didn't do any other damage to lifters etc.

When someone is absolutely 100% sure they know exactly what your problem is and how to fix it, it's time to ask someone else!

Well I have been looking for a good reason to redo the top end...  maybe this is it.  I just don't know if my spinal cord is healed enough for it.  Then again I do have two sons and they do make for some pretty good slave labor.

Fwiw,

I've seen the FP pushrod worn down like that and the lifters were fine. You can allways cut the oil filter open and inspect the media for metal particles/shavings.....or pull the valley pan and have a look at the lifters if it's really bothering you.  :scope:

I'll put it back together for now and see how it goes, and I probably will open up the filter just to have a look.  I did order a made in America pushrod yesterday, so hopefully I will be good to go for a bit.

Was this a Carter M6903 fuel pump? I installed one on my 440 and it ate 1/4" of pushrod on the dyno. Oil used was Comp break in oil with Lucas Zinc additive and Joe Gibbs Driven HR-2 with Lucas additive following cam break in.

WANTED: NOS or excellent condition 72-74 4 speed shifter boot for bench or centre armrest car, part number 3467755. It's a rubber boot that looks like it's sewn up leather.

WANTED: My original 440 blocks. Serial # 2A188182 and 3A100002

Yea, I think that was the one.  I just changed the oil to the Brad Penn that Ron recommended, and put in the new pushrod, but with a stock pump for now.  I'll leave the stock in for a little while just to make sure it too doesn't get eaten up, then I'll put the high volume Carter back in and see if it holds up.  I'll report back then.

I cut the oil filter open and looked around for metal shavings or chunks or anything out of the ordinary.  I couldn't find anything, so I think, it didn't break off in chunks, but more of a fine sanding down type of a process, and with the new rod and stock pump it seems to run fine, so I think the cam is still ok too.
