440 A/C car - pulley alignment water pump & alternator

I've had a few issues lately that I've been working to resolve with the front end.  Had to replace the harmonic balancer, water pump, fan, etc.  I also replace the alternator a couple years back.  The car is fairly new to me, so I'm still learning what the previous owner has done to the car, and what parts he has on here...good and bad.

What I know I have that may be releveant:
1969 Charger R/T original 440 car
1978 440 block has been put in
Water pump housing with outlet on driver side, so must be an older housing from early 70's.
4-groove crank pulley
Single groove water pump pulley
2-groove alternator pulley
2-groove compressor pulley (aftermarket VintageAir system but in original A/C car.)

My issue is how badly the pulley's line up.  I'll try to bullet the notes below:

Double-Belt setup (A/C Compressor to Alternator to Crank)

  • My alternator sits about 3/4" too far back, throwing it off from the A/C compressor and the crank pulley.
  • The A/C compressor seems to be lined up well with the back two grooves of the crank pulley.
I believe the main problem here is the alternator bracket.  I feel like my "research" proves that this bracket is the right one.  http://www.bpeusa.com/BPE5253.asp  Would be good to get a second from someone else on that...

The other single belt setup (Power steering to water pump to crank)

  • The PS pulley seems to line up well with the crank's 3rd groove from back.
  • The PS pulley seems just slightly twisted.  Not sure what I can do to fix that...
  • The bigger problem.  The single groove water pump pulley lines up between the 3rd and 4th groove from back.

Talking with BPE, they suggested to first look at the harmonic balancer.  Verify it was installed right and fully pulled up on the crankshaft.  They said that many people use impact wrenches to suck it down, which dishes the big washer and allowing the bolt to bottom out before pulling the harmonic balancer all the way up.  I've got to try to see if I can measure it for correctness.  He also recommended using a double pulley on the water pump instead of this single pulley and running this single belt on the inside groove down to the 3rd groove from back of the crank, then over to the PS pulley.  This would leave the outside groove on water pump open, as well as the outside groove on the crank.

Are there any other ideas I should be trying?  Take a look at the pictures and let me know if anything stands out...

1st you need to use a straight edge to line up the pulleys,, the power stg belt goes around the second groove from the front only on the crank, the water pump goes around the 1st groove & there is a tensioner for that belt, also you need to get the 69 alternator brackets,  i will get you some links & pictures

now my alternator brackets are different than 69 but this is how things should be.

These are BPE brackets on my 440.  BPE is about 10 miles from me.  Water pump setup is opposite yours I think.  I also believe the chrome pulleys are theirs also.  I didn't buy this stuff but it came on my motor swap I did and was free to me.  I just removed some stuff before I read this or I would have taken some belt pictures.  The top pulley and alum block is something I made to fill in for the CAA air compressor until I get the whole system installed in case your wth that thing is  :scratchchin:  Hope this helps.  Flash from camera sure shows up the dust  :eek2:

these people have everything you need.

That is who I talked to today.  I believe it was Randy.
Very knowledgeable man.  Knew his stuff.  Apparently hates idler pulleys.
He recommended once I get the harmonic balancer on right (assuming that was the problem), then to switch to a 2-groove water pump pulley and run the one belt between PS, crank, and water pump all on the 2nd from front crank and water pump grooves.

Thanks for the pics of yours. Always helpful.  I'll continue to update as I make any progress or run into issues.

Like the setup!
Looks like BPE set yours up exactly like the suggested to me... The double WP pulley and leaving the outer groove on WP and crank empty.  I bet either my harmonic balancer isn't installed properly, or I replaced the old one with one the wrong thickness.  It'll be the first thing I check.
