Hey guys,

Just got my 73 Charger delivered yesterday and I'm making my "list" of things to do.  The car could use a battery.  Would the Turbo Start S27MRL been in my 318 car from the factory?  I found one for $219 and I'm ready to buy, but I'm seeing some information saying this battery would of only been found in a 440 car in 73.  Would it be overkill for my 318 or still a wise choice?  If not what battery would you guys recommend?

Thanks and I'll be posting some pictures of the car soon!

Welcome too.  And a question - I gather you are looking for a battery to be 'correct' in the restoration sense, but I am not quite sure from the last few statements you make in your post.  Either way, someone on here will have an answer.  (I am not using a period-correct looking battery - so also not the person to answer the post).
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

welcome to the site          don't think you can have "over kill " with batteries  . I have one on order for the roadrunner

I think it would of come down the line with  the  green top one but   :Twocents:

Hi Alan,

You car would have used a Group 24 battery, not 27. However, the 27 won't  hurt it if you want to use one.

Good luck with your car and welcome to the site!

Thanks guys, that's what I needed to know.  Looks like the S24MG green top would of been the battery.  Summit has it for $209 with free shipping, I don't think I'll beat that.  I'll have some pictures up this weekend.

i put a 2002 honda civic battery in my charger with a bigblock, it worked fine just my  :Twocents: but compression ratio and ignition style (points, HEI, MSD) are a factor.

a bigger battery needs a bigger alternator, and more cranking amps means a shorter backup life if the alternator was to die on the road.

a 440 battery is likely matched with an alternator with higher amperage. but im just thinking outloud here  :scratchchin:

Anyway, Welcome to the site Alan, hope you find your time here useful  :2thumbs:

Hi,

Welcome to the group. On my 71 the stock battery was a group 24. I ordered the heavy duty battery option and the car came through with a group 27 battery. It never hurts to have a little more battery capacity.
