Been so long since I took one off and had headers since so I can't remember.  :scratchchin:  I had to remove a broken end stud and what a pain that was behind the brake booster so putting on manifolds now

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Did you ask a question or try to tell us something?

oldcarnut

Lol.  I asked the question in the subject line but just half way stated what led me ask it as I was holding the messed up stud in.my hand.   Soooo here it is Did the nuts mounting  the HP exhaust manifolds utilize a washer or lock washer behind them?

Kern Dog

The ones I have taken apart did not have any washers, just those odd sleeve type bolts. That is not to say that someone, years ago, had the manifolds off for some reason. Lots of stuff gets lost or changed, so I can only account for the "seasoned" engines that I have dealt with.

Lock Washers??---They have no place or value where a critical mounting surface is used.  If you have a fan (for example) with a screen held on with screws a lock washer may be a good choice.

The only thing lock washers do is gouge up the nut/bolt and or the mounting surface.  If the bolt or nut is not properly tightened all the lock washer does is keep the bolt or nut from vibrating off. And that is not a sure thing.

I think Randy Newman may have written a song about this. :scratchchin:--Their ain't no room for lock washers.

So now y'all know how I feel about lock washers. :nana:

Thanks for the info guys.  As I try to fit all these pieces back to the car my memory isn't as good as it was 7yrs a go when I started striping it down and intended to have it back together in 7 months  :pullinghair:
