Hi. Im looking at a 68 charger 383 4spd, engine have been recently painted orange and vin number on the right side have been painted over! The lip infront of the distributor is saying " D 383 4  1"
no HP letters to see.

No HP stamping, it's not an HP motor but after 45+ years who knows what's inside.

If it's an issue just scrape the paint off the VIN pad.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Ok, the seller have a book about 68 charger. There is Nothing in the book that says magnum or HP about engines, only 383 4barrell 330hp. Still need HP stamp??

I think the D in "D 383 4  1" indicates 1968.

On 68 block I have from my RR, the VIN is back kinda near the oil pressure sender, where the bellhousing connects to the block.

A 68 Charger would not have come with a 335 horse HP engine so no HP stamp on an original motor. The HP version reserved for the Road Runner and Super Bee for the '68 model year B body line up.

VIN code H and engine code 62 only tell you it's a 383-4bbl. They do not tell you WHICH 383-4bbl it is.
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

Ok, thanks. Does the 330hp  engine got flat piston and forged crank like the magnum?

Revving the engine when its cold it burn some oil, better when its warm. And the oil pressure says 20-22 when its warm. My 383 non HP engine in my 70' charger got 40 when its warm.

A 383 HP, (magnum) is the same a regular 383, except;  a 4 barrel, exhaust manifolds and a windage tray.  That's it.

I have been reading many places that 383 2bbl got dished pistons and 383 HP got flat pistons.
Bullshit?

Same pistons. Yea, I forgot the cam.

Anyway, after 45 years (engine) has either been rebuilt or it needs it (or both)

pistons are different from 2 & 4 bbl, also my 1968 383 2bbl came with  250 casting heads.
