numbers matching where are they

i have a buyer for my 68 383 charger and he want me to verify if original engine. ive tried searching the forum and i know where the number are on my 69 daytona 440 but not the 383 there are no numbers in the same place so where should i look for the vin on a 383
if it was easy anyone could do it

if it is stamped it will be at the back of the block edge, near the oil pressure switch  not all 68's got stamped.

1968 model year Charger 383 4bbl (& trans) will be stamped back by the oil sending unit  :scratchchin: here's an engine & 727 from different Hamtramck cars

Your saying only 383 4bbl and R/T's had the vin stamped? So a 318 or 383 2bbl car cannot be confirmed to be numbers matching?

Yes.  And don't forget that in 68 you can't tie an engine to a body without the broadcast sheet as the body is stamped with the order # not the VIN.


Plus: If I understand it correctly there is another caveat. Since the VIN stamping law wasn't in effect until Jan 1 of 68 you can't be guaranteed that early production BB cars got stamped.

My May 68 build 383-4 charger has the partial VIN stamped in the same place as show above.
68 Charger 383 HP grandma car (the orignal 3X)

If no VIN - You will have to check the block casting date and engine assembly date to see where they are in respect to the scheduled production date.

For WIW, my early 68 engine (vin #XS29L8B1631xx) has no stampings, neither on the bellhousing near the oil sending unit nor on the pain rail.
