I found this challenge a bit confusing with the rules that seemed to change all the time?  :shruggy:
And what they did to the mayhem's taillights is just wrong, that car was perfect.

I must have been living under a rock the last few months. I never heard of the Gas Monkey Dart and didnt know they had upgraded the drivetrain in the Roadkill Charger.

:image_294343:  I agree, that is just god-awful and tragic.  Those taillights are a defining feature of the 68's, arguably the best year ever.   :icon_smile_wink:  But really, WTF were they thinking?  The mind whirls.    :eek2:

WHITE AND RED 69

I'm a huge Roadkill & General Mayhem fan (those tail lights were a terrible idea though) but I think they deserved to get beat. They called out Gas Monkey to build a car with a hellcat motor after their car was already months into the drive train swap. Their car was basically done and then laid down the rules to Gas Monkey who didn't even have a car at the time. So it's pretty amazing that the dart was built in a short time and performed as it did.

The true winner in all this...Dodge. What a nice publicity stunt.

I think the Roadkill event was to get a lot of beginners out on the track so the 1/8 mile track makes it a tad safer?

Thanks, Baldwinvette77 for posting that photo up.  I feel a little relieved and cautiously optimistic Lennard is right, it's a joke, and those taillights won't be living there long.  Very funny - now change it back...   :yesnod:

I don't think the new Charger tail lights look all that bad on the Charger, if they were mounted flush in the panel like they're supposed to be.

myk

Sure they could've mounted the lights better, but the only tail lights that belong on a 2nd Gen. are the little round ones that came on the '68... :yesnod:

Brass

From their FB page:

"We totally agree on the taillights. 100%. But they are controlled by the body computer which won't handle signaling or powering incandescent bulbs. We will be rigging a stand-Alina system to put the stock lights back on."

Heart attack averted.

Baldwinvette77

They couldn't have just thrown them in the trunk?  would have been easier than duct taping them to the tailpanel

Nobody experiences the real world without viewing it through their phones these days. I was hoping the fad would go away but it only seems to get worse.

The Charger driver looked like he left first but the Dart was way too strong off the line. I suspect the power to weight ratio favored the Dart quite a bit as well...

I watch GMG, but I love Roadkill. To me, Roadkill seems more legit, I guess because its an Internet show (I understand that RK is sponsered by Dodge, that's why they got the Hellcat engine in their car), but most of the builds on Roadkill (including the the build of this 68 with the Motor Home 440), are low buck builds any of us can do in our own home garages. GMG is entertaining, and Arron seems like a really smart guy that knows his stuff, but its still has that fake reality Discovery Channel drama. Frieburger has said before RK is legit, but on few occasions, they will have to re-enact something if the cameras wasn't rolling and they missed something funny.

Ryan, the link didn't work for me. ask David if he ever got the charger registered. i remember them having issues with the DVM. just curious if he got it legal to drive on the road. and if they did any upgrades to the head lights. looks from the pic above to be brighter than old 68's. did they use the headlights off the hellcat like they did the taillights. thanks again Ryan.

Pictures should work now.

The Mayhem does have subframe connectors.

It is not registered still.

Headlights are from the 2015 Hellcat Charger they gutted, as well as the tail lights because there is some computer board in them, if they aren't seen by the computer, the car won't run.  This will be rectified in due time.  But couldn't fix it in time for Dream Cruise.  He plans on running a completely independent lighting harness eventually and gutting the 2015 stuff.  So the computer will see the stuff is there, but he can run 68 tail lights and headlights again.

Thanks Ryan, link is working. Thanks for getting answers for our questions. What about the A/C stuff for the charger. Did they just leave the compressor mounted under the hood or did he run a belt bypassing it. Or maybe general mayhem has A/C now, lol?

Yeppers, and good news.  They got the plates in the mail yesterday before we left.  The General Mayhem is now street legal.

Unfortunately the General Mayhem damaged the passenger side front suspension on Saturday, so tomorrow we're going to have to do some surgery and replace the lower control arm and strut rod.  I've been calling all over trying to find a Torsion Bar puller to borrow... but no luck.  And YES I know there are other ways to remove the torsion bars without a puller, but the way the lower control arm is now bent.... we need a puller.

Any other questions, let me know.

lukedukem

Ryan, ask what kind of exhaust they used. i know it has headers that were modified. but after that.
I've got a great idea, make a roadkill calender. please.

Sorry about the delay.  Internet has been spotty.

The exhaust is just some 1 foot glass packs  that dump in front of the rear wheels.

Front suspension damage . . . did it hit a curb or something?

TheAutoArchaeologist

No, it's a long story.  When I get home I'll type it all out.  But a safety chain bent the passenger side lower control arm..... badly.  So it wasn't safe to drive any real distance.  We swapped it out at the Osage drag strip on Wednesday.

Here's what happened.

Between burnouts #2 and #3 on Woodward, the General Mayhem actually melted the rear tires to the plate they were doing burnouts on.  So when they went to do burnout #3, the car had insane traction for a split second and lurched forward, breaking one of the ratchet straps holding the car from running into the General Maintenance.  The only thing that stopped it from wrecking was the safety chain wrapped around the lower control arm..... bam!  Twisted control arm!

Luke, YES that Challenger and truck are on the roof.  How crazy was that!

Another great episode.
After all the build up though, I thought they could have punched out more than just 26 minutes.
As dukem said, more of the actual swap would have been good viewing.
Looking forward to them swapping back those taillights and getting Mayhem out on the dirt.

I don't see the Mayhem getting any faster on the dirt/gravel with that Hellcat motor.

The car had more power than it could use on that course last time, with just the raggedy motorhome 440 and one functioning gear.  Now they've added several hundred more pounds worth of horsepower & gears.

The car really needs less curb weight & more tire to get more speed on the gravel.

But faster lap times on the gravel isn't necessarily their goal.  They seem more interested in just having fun with it.

Well it might be a while, depending upon how they roll out the episodes from the Roadkill Takes America Tour.

But because of the damage to the LCA during Woodward Dream Cruise on Saturday... The General Mayhem did not really do anything until nearly the end.

But yeah, the car needs better traction, a transmission that works and some other odds and ends WAY before horsepower to be faster at Dirtfish.

I went back and watched the roadkill episode. Why did they keep hitting the rev limiter between shifts? Couldn't they tune that out? Lower the shift point or raise the rev limiter? I bet it was pulling a bunch of timing when they did that.

Just an FYI...   reality TV shenanigans from last nights Fast & Loud.

The Travers stakes that 'Texas Red' ran in against 'American Pharoah' at Saratoga, NY was held on Aug 29.

Texas Red did win the Jim Dandy stakes on Aug 1 at Saratoga.   American Pharoah won the Haskell in NJ on Aug 2.

Roadkill Night was Aug 12.

Kern Dog

Shave the stupid beard. It stands out like a hard-on in a nudists colony. Car guy? Sure but why look like a cast member of some Moonshiner TV show ?
The Roadkill guys are more my style. Frieberger is more of a Mopar guy than you'll find in all of the Ass Monkey crew. Ass Monkey is also sponsored by Dodge but you can tell that they are not as enthusiastic about it.
