need help decoding transmission numbers

I have a trans that I took out of a 67 Coronet that is going in my charger. I was going to try putting a shift kit in it. I bought a TRANS go TF2 kit. I have read the directions and different years of transmissions get different things done to them. I would just like to know what year mine is so I can know what to pay more attention to before I open it up. Also is there any way to tell what the gear ratio is by the numbers? or better yet is there a really good web site or app for this? Here are the numbers.       Tail shaft casting # 2466901       
     Numbers stamped on trans pan side are   PK3515845L   3374  9263
     Numbers cast on bell housing are 433-3 on both sides.

That is a 1971 transmission for a 383-2bbl. that was produced Oct. 23, 1970. Not really sure what ratios were standard with it but it was, most likely, just a standard 727.

All 727's have the same gear ratios. The 383-2 is about as low on the performance scale as you'll find in a big block transmission....3-disc front clutch, low lever ratio, etc. It'll need more than a shift kit if exposed to any real power.

Of course, this assumes that nothing has been upgraded in the 45 years since its birth.

Thanks John. Its just going to be a stock 65 383 516 heads 4-barrel with a mopar purple cam shaft that I bought and never used. I think .484 lift thats about all I remember about it right now. Is there a way to tell which auto transmissions are better than others by looking at the Numbers stamped on them. Any link to a good site to do some reading would be appreciated. Thanks again John.

The partial VIN is on the opposite side, on the bell.

PK3515845L   3374  9263

PK= Plant Kokomo
3515845= The transmission part number
3374= Build date based on a 10,000 day calendar
9263= Sequence number, the 9263rd built that day

The partial VIN will be found stamped in a raised pad on the passenger sided of the bellhousing.

Thanks Alaskan_TA. So John do you mean that the 9263 was the 9263rd trans built that year or that they actually were able to put together 9263 transmisssions in one day?

Yep, one day. The first trans built the next day would be 0001.
