I am trying to remove the torsion bars and LCA off a 74 Charger with an automatic transmission.  This is my first Mopar, and therefore my first dealings with torsion bars.
I'm following the (deceptively simple) service manual instructions:
1.Remove UCA bumper (the UCA is off the car, so that's good :icon_smile_big:
2.Lifted car, been that way since winter
3Released load fully from torsion bars
4.Removed the lock ring, thin metal ring

5. From manual: "Remove automatic transmission torque shaft on carlines R,W [Charger!],B,J,V and L with stick shift"
I don't see anything that resembles a torque shaft from the tranny, and the way I read that sentence it seems to apply only to cars with a stick shift? So that would not apply to me

6. I don't have the special tool, so I'm using a pair of vice grips protecting the bar with rubber heater hose, which I got from the site.

Just to be on the safe side, I shot some WD40 into the socket where the LCA and torsion bar meet and at the rear end of the bar as well.  After repeated strikes with a hammer, I cannot get this bar to budge.

I've either missed something or I need a better pair orf vice grips.

Can anyone help?

tranny stuff ? why ? I don't know what the hell has to do any part of tranny on this deal.

another trick... you can try to push to rear the LCA from K member once you released the front nut and TB will be easier to get out from LCA. ;)

Chryco Psycho

undo the nut on the LCA pivot  & pry the control arm & the T bar & LCA back it should come out easily

Guys,

Thanks for the replies - your tip worked great!

hemihead

My t-bars were stuck at the rear anchors and I had to unbolt my t-bar crossmember and smack the crossmember off the back of the bars with a rubber mallet. The came right out then.  ;D
