From personal experience ...

Unless CA & AZ DOT formally officially announce a closer alternate route - if any one is traveling the I-10
between Los Angeles, CA and Phoenix, AZ or vice-versa ...

Normally you would go this way @ http://mapq.st/1OiMEWJ

It is better to take either of these routes ...

@ http://mapq.st/1IfooVk


Since everyone (including heavy trucks) will be looking for a short cut when they hit the detour signs along I-10 ....

You are looking at long delays if there are any shortcuts open ....

California was a great place to grow up in back in the day....the key word being "was".  In the 60's and 70's it was a fantastic place.  The girls, the cars, the girls, the beach, the girls, the mountains, and did I mention the girls.   But sadly times have changed...yes, all the above are still there but it's just not the same.  I have no desire to ever live in the state again as it hasn't been the same place for a long time...In fact even when I go back for a visit or to attend the Spring Fling I usually end up asking myself, why am I here....so I will not be losing sleep over the road being gone......

I travel that road a couple times a year. It is amazing how strong and fast the water comes through those dry washes. We passed through during a rain storm last year. The water will erode the soil very quickly. It is just sand and rocky soil.

We go to Newport Beach to see the kids. Preferably when it is over 110 here in Phoenix. California just creeps me out. The people are creepy, the laws are creepy. Just feels weird being there. I dont know how else to explain it other than they have gone nuts over there. People are not friendly like in the midwest where I came from. The people are almost robotic trying to follow all there self imposed rules.
