Installing a 75 amp alternator in place of my week 35 amp set in my 69 charger,  along with wiring harness for electronic voltage regulator & a 4 prong ballast.  just wanted to confirm any amp alternator higher than 55 amps requires a 10 gauge wire between battery and starter relay to protect the dash harness from getting to hot ? I already have my alter meter gauge modded to a sunpro gauge set under the dash. Ive seen some guys wires burn that back of the amp meter gauge on dash clusters,  Anything else I need to do for this change over as far as protecting the cars harnesses from getting to hot from the extra amps im needing ?

If anyones curious, im doing this because when im not moving mainly at night with my lights and all on my gauge dim and all. Just trying to fix all that, these cars require so much power.

Hi and welcome to the group,

For a 75 amp alternator, I would run an 8 gauge wire between the alternator and battery terminal on the starter relay. I would also fuse it with an 80 amp Maxi-Fuse in a good quality holder such as a NAPA NW784482.

Going over to relay control of your headlights will give you much brighter lights. Do a search on relay headlight modifications in this section.

well, as Pete know and allmost every member here, I alwyas gives this link.

NO NEED TO BY PASS THE AMMETER running the wire straight to the batt... and IN FACT, allmost bypassing JUST the bulkhead terminal from alt wire to ammeter could be enough! Just is better bypass both terminals of the bat/alt chargin net, instead just the alt side since you are making the job

hey guys,, so my new powermaster 75 amp alternator, the box says If your upgrading the amps from stock then upgrade  wire to  140A  8awg.  min   200A  4awg.       I thought 10 gauge was the gauge I suspose to use for 75 Amps,   what are your thoughts guys, by  what they printed on the box,

Dino

You want a cushion.  Install 8awg.   :yesnod:

Don't forget the fuse, maxi or anl 80A.   :2thumbs:
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

The type is fine, but it's a bit short.  Running along the passenger side valve cover and the firewall will require closer to 4-5' if I recall.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

yeah, I noticed that I found the 4 foot one and just ordered that one ! looks like same wire I got on my 02 Trans am.  Makes sense lol :2thumbs:    thanks for the help man,, oh also I should just need to run another single 8 awg wire between battery and starter relay ?  Also which one would the fuse go on, between battery and starter relay or the one I just ordered ?

There should already be a heavy gauge wire between the battery and starter relay as part of the original battery cable, so no need to add another wire.  The 80 amp fuse will go in the new cable you bought between the alternator output and battery.
