How long should things take?

For some reason it seems to takes ages to get stuff back from being rebuilt, I'm talking months.

It took 2 months to have my transmission rebuilt, a simple Ford C4. The shop owner is someone I know and I paid a fair price for it. He says it needed a new forward drum which he showed me, but had a hard time getting one. He showed me the drums he ordered in and there were problems with 4 of them !!

I thought it shouldn't take much longer then 2 months for engine/trans rebuild, back in the car and on my way. Obviously rebuilding is slower then a straight changeover but still.

How long should this stuff take? I realize living in Australia makes stuff harder but does everything usually take this long?

Engine took 2 months (351c)
Trans took 2 months (C4)
Torque converter took 1 month
Charger dash took 2 years

maybe they are prioritizing there work load.

daily drivers get the repaired first, project cars second.

I'm assembling my second Challenger in two years right now. Things go great guns and then you need a part and you lose 3 weeks or a month waiting for the part. If the stuff was current and parts available it would be weeks. It's the waiting for parts though that slows things up.

How long did they tell you it would take?

That's probably part of the problem I guess, trans shop didn't really give a time frame, however, when I blew the C6 up in my F150 4x4 in the US it only took a couple of weeks to get it back. Thats including picking the truck up on a trailer with removal and installation of the trans.

I'm looking forward to picking up my trans tomorrow, fingers crossed it goes smoothly from here on out.

The charger dash on the other hand was pretty unacceptable in my opinion. I was always the one to call and it would always be promised pretty much next week. This went on for 2 years!!!!

I lost a huge amout of interest in my Charger due to others dragging their feet. I would do most of the work and keep the project rolling along but others would let me down.

sometimes you gotta nag em, but as a reminder.  Say every 2 weeks ask how things are, etc...

I once read about some guy getting  a 871 blower being built from Don Hampton it took the guy 2 years to build one.  I guess the guy was not in a rush he even admitted it since his engine also took 2 years to build and it was not because he didn't have the funds he claimed he was not in a hurry.

me I occasionally called up about my blower hows it going, things ok, etc...Im not waiting 2  years to get a blower built  ;D

Always set a time frame.  If they think they can take their time, they will.  If the shop says two weeks then I will tell them I'll be back in two weeks.  A few days before the deadline I will call and tell them I'll be there to pick up the part.  Either it's done and you get paid, or I take it back, you don't get paid and you get a nasty online review.  I don't mess around with this stuff.  I've got things to do.
