Ok, I looked at the rods and pistons, an I think its like chryco said for mine it appears that the pistion arrow will face toward the front for the drivers side, but I haven't gotten to the pass side yet.  Is this a common trait for a 383?  again I'll double check tomorrow, but from what I could tell, the highest angle between the rod, and the crank will occur when the engine is at the bottom of the stroke, thus with offset pistons, the longer half of the piston should be toaward the crank.

On just about any piston, the notch faces the front of the motor, both sides. If the piston has a centered wrist pin then it usually doesn't matter unless it has valve reliefs cut in the top which is self explanitory, good luck.

Arrows or notches should face forward on both sides...unless otherwise says different

exactly if the pin is centrered it makes no difference & if the pin is offset then the arrow cannot point forward on both sides so why have an arrow ?
