new power steering gear pulling to right?????

Hi guys!   I just installed a rebuilt power steering gear in my 70 Bird clone.   The steering wheel spins to the right by itself!  What to do?

The spring that controls the valve is in upside down.  The long part goes in first.  Ask me how I know.........

The housing on top of the power steering gear box that the power steering line goes into is adjustable
The housing will slide up or down a little bit
If it is too far one way the steering wheel will spin on its own

Maybe it is not centered in the sweet spot ??

thanks guys.  my spring was in the correct way.  AS far as the valve body "sweet spot"  I took it off and it seemed to be centerd.  putting it back together for another test.  This is getting old.  Been in and out 7 times now

Best I can remember, this is a fairly fine adjustment.  I've only had to do it once.  Just loosen the two mounting bolts until you can tap/push the casting (inlet hose casting) up or down then start the car and adjust till the steering wheel stays centered.  Tighten the nuts and you're done.

The FSM is a little vague, but if you have one the procedure is on page 19-19 under "Tests and Adjustments"  paragraph (4)

The front tires need to be off the ground when making the steering valve adjustment. Loosen the two bolts only enough to be able to bump the valve up/down (otherwise you'll have a running leak) with a light hammer blow.

I am having this same problem right now.  My box worked fine but it leaked like a faucet.  I took it out and completely disassembled it and put a new set of seals in the box.  I put it back in and it almost ripped my arm off spinning to the left.  I checked and the spring mentioned above was indeed upside down.  Now I have it back together and it doesn't feel like I have any assist at all to the right and only some to the left.  I tapped the control valve to adjust a bot and it slammed the wheel to the left hard and the pump started squeeling.  I have read horror stories about this happening on the road at 50 MPH.  What have I don't wrong and how the heck do I fix this?  When you move the valve on top is it supposed to move the piston up and down?  I am wondering if I have the end play adjustment too tight and maybe its not allowing the piston to move?  Very confused right now and scared to get it on the road.

I got it fixed!!!!  That valve body held on by two bolts is the adjustment for right and left.  I loosened the two bolts just a little and tapped the valve body up (toward steering wheel) and it quit pulling to the right.  Started pulling slightly to the left.  Another tiny tap down (toward front of car) made it work perfect.  I am amazed at what a difference that valve makes by just a hair tap up or down.  I did not have to pull the gear out of the car which was nice.  I could get to the two bolts with a 1/2 inch socket and extension.
