In a prior life someone has fitted a post 73 belleville spring in my 71 trans, it creates a bit of excess play. can I install a late piston or should I just get the correct spring. My understanding is the later spring softens the neutral to drive shift.

You can minimize the play either way but I'd install the later piston. The '74 and later Bellville (on left below) is much beefier, less prone to failure. The later piston has casting number 3743623 and is about .050" thicker than the early piston.
