Can i use a remote hand held starter on the starter relay terminals to start my car and drive it? Will it mess things up?

Back N Black

No problem, I use to have a old Roadrunner hook up from the relay to a push button under the dash.

GN

Will the motor shut off with the key? Push to start, but what will turn it off? And still be able to drive?

Dino

With a functioning ignition switch the key would have to be in the on position for the remote starter to work, and turning the key off would kill the engine.  But if you want to use a remote starter then does this mean your ignition switch is not in working order?

Not sure. I am going to replace the nss first. Then i think it might be the ignition switch.

Dino

Oh it's just not spinning the starter when you turn the key?  Bypass the nss first.  If it fires up then you know it needs replacing.  If not then it may be the switch, although a loose wire in the bulkhead can do the same. I found that out the hard way...

Have you tried starting it through the starter relay?  You don't even need a remote starter, just a few alligator clips.  Hook up one to the starter relay solenoid wire and the other to the positive batter post.  Touch the other ends of the wires together, it should crank but will not start if the ignition is in the off position.  With the key in the on position it should fire right up.

When i turn the key  nothing. Maybe a click. Have a new battery. I did use a screwdriver to touch the prongs on the starter relay and it wanted to start. So you think it might be the nss?

It may be, but we can't be sure yet as this also bypasses the ignition switch.  Try bypassing the nss, if the key fires it up then you know it's the nss or its connector.

If your starter relay is the same as mine, there are two blades on them, one angled and one straight.  Ground the straight one to the negative battery terminal, make sure the car is in park or neutral and turn the key.  If the ignition switch is good it'll crank but be careful not to leave it in gear because it will start!

What about the other blade? Just leave it disconnected?

Dino

The yellow wire?  No leave it in place or the ignition switch won't work.

Thanks, i will try that out.

GN

It was the nss switch. Thanks for all the help.

Dino

Awesome!  It was my pleasure.

Be sure to clean the connector and check for continuity before you order a new switch.  When mine was giving me fits it was the rubber boot not sealing right and letting crud in, the switch itself turned out to be fine.

Thanks Dino for the tips. What about atf? I am using atf4.

Dino

That's fine.  Some use ATF3, others use the Ford stuff.  I haven't heard of any ATF that doesn't work to be honest.

I use Valvoline Maxlife Dexron/Mercon.
