I have a short tail shaft 4-speed transmission. I have been on Brewers web site to try and figure out what year it is but If the dates on the transmission do not seem to work with the 10,000 day callender. the pad on the trans looks like it is stamped 66 143454 but Brewers says they did not have a raised pad on them untill 67. I guess it is possiable that it says 68. The second # is hard to read. but the number under that is supposed to be my 10,000 day callender number and it reads PP833 5158. what year did the 10,000 day calender start? The way I figure it it is somewhere in 1974 if I start in 1960. I am not sure if I am figuring this right. Also there should be a 3 digit after the 5158 but there is nothing stamped on mine. Any thoughts guys? :shruggy:

... looks like it is stamped 66 143454 .... to be my 10,000 day callender number and it reads PP833 5158.

The first number appears to be the VIN number. It appears to be 6G143454 or a mid November (1975) SPD. That would work fine with a September 11, 1975 (5158) 10K calendar transmission.
STL Plant did make A bodies for MY 1976.

Saturday July 29th, 1961 (approximate start of 1962 production) is Day One on a 10K calendar.

Thanks 69 CoronetRT sorry it took so long to thank you for your help.

5158 is the build date September 11, 1975..an early '76 model.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

If mine was built in 75 Would it be an overdrive? how can I tell my looking inside it if it is an overdrive?

troy.70R/T

I think its just a regular 4-speed.

1st gear 35 teeth
2nd gear 34 teeth
3rd gear 29 teeth
input shaft 25 teeth
Cluster gear is 30-26-23-17R-17
the cluster and the gears all have three grooves machined in them.

It was assembled in 75 (Sept 11th, 1975) for a 1976 Model year car (6G in the VIN).

Since the only passenger car four speed for the '76 model year was the OD transmission we can surmise that this is an overdrive transmission.

Well I have looked on Brewers website and everything that they have on there tells me that it is a regular 4-speed. Could someone have put regular 4-speed parts in an overdrive case?
it is 23 spline input shaft
30 spline output shaft
tailshaft casting # is C99126-2
IBR  P# is C13157 and is 5.125 dia.
Could it have been a warranty 4-speed trans assembled in 75?

Ok so as far as I can tell from my research this is a regular 4 speed and NOT an overdrive. If it was an overdrive wouldnt the third gear be much smaller? Can anyone confirm this? Thanks.

John_Kunkel

Regardless of the stamped date, the gears aren't OD. A warranty trans wouldn't have a stamped partial VIN and the plant code G in the stamped VIN shows the car was built at the St. Louis; St. Louis built A-bodies and F-bodies in '76. (among others)

Thanks for the confirmation John.  :2thumbs: I have been looking for a good book about the A-833 Four speed. For identification and rebuilding purposes. could you recommend any?

I rebuilt my 833 using the sources in the above links. I have a press, made up all the tools I needed, but bought the bushing puller/installer tool John recommended to me at the time.
