Because no one else is foolish enough to pay the kind of money he did.

super77se

what a shame to try and erase the General Lees originality....

If I had the money I would have paid that for it. To restore the charger was around 75k. To own one of the original 3 would also be worth something, so I think 110 is fair. That's just my opinion however.

But to disgrace the car on top  :slap:

I totally agree he should NOT change the flag. :flame:

Is there really anything much about Lee 1 genuine enough to be concerned about?  Isn't it largely just a VIN tag and a few inches of cowl or something?

Yea but it represents history he should really wait for all this to blow over he'll find out he'll be kicking himself later.

While that may be true, someone should politely ask him to leave the car alone, or sell to someone who will care for it properly  :Twocents:

I don't see it as a General Lee anymore.  I don't see how anyone could.  It's a package.  It's like ordering a Hellcat, and then getting the v6 for an engine.

If he wants to be politically correct, get a Camaro or Mustang.

F8-4life

Heck maybe his agent told him to do it, I find it hard to believe something so stupid.
But hey he has the cash to strip and repaint and the next owner will also have the cash to repaint the flag back on it.

I just like the fact that good ole Bubba isn't painting over the Confederate flag because he believes it's racist and all men are created equal.  Except gays, Bubba is on record with that topic already.  :icon_smile_big:

That's not how political correctness works. Political correctness means my agenda is right. Not right for me, right for everyone, and so I get to make the decision for everyone. Selling it would not piss anyone off and finding ridiculous ways to piss people off is central to the PC movement. Bubba and the rest of the flag-haters sort of remind me of ISIS running amok all over the middle east destroying historical artifacts they don't like.

Well then why would he even want it In the first place?   I remember watching the video of him driving it around the country club and everybody was cheering and waving to him and he was going on and on about how much he loved the car and what a huge part of his childhood it was! He might've even mention the flag and how it represented Southern pride. it's a general lee!!!! he might as we'll sell it if what it represents is offensive to him. After he changes the flag he'll have to change the name of the car to the General Grant. Talk about a Fairweather fan that changes his stance as soon as the breeze picks up!  If he's such a fan of the car he would use this as a perfect opportunity to defend the car and the TV show

He wanted a General Lee Charger and he went to an auction.

That's exactly right.

So he found the nicest General Lee on the property (in this case it was Lee #1) and laid some serious money down to buy it -- on that particular day.

Most people would agree that Bubba could have been happy with any General Lee at half the price...... but his huge ego pressed him to become the highest bidder on the most expensive car in the room at the time.

He's now become a horrible custodian for the most iconic General Lee (known to collectors as Lee #1).

But hey, this egotistical Bubba Watson is brainless when it comes to cars and unfortunately, he's got cash to burn.

We can only hope he destroys his golfing career as badly as he's ruined this car.

The most obvious question: he knew it had the confederate flag when he bought it but two days ago he get's a "change of heart" because the media called the flag bad? ???

Bubba Watson......You are a spineless douchebag in my opinion.  I hope you get BOO'D OFF every golf course you play.  :patriot:

We can flood the landscape with the Confederate flag in hopes it will send the proper message. If those that see the flood as a racial uprising it will expose them as being the irrational sheep that they are. The optimistic hope is some of the sheep may talk to the other sheep and say---Pssst---We may not be sheep afterall--We may be goats. :eek2:

What makes the difference? It's not like the car is still wearing the same TV used paint job. A repaint is a repaint. Eventually he will tire of the car and look for something else. When this car gets listed, its pedigree will be prominently advertised to maximize his profit or minimize his loss. Either way, he will still be a sellout to his precious "belief" system.

Bubba Watson, like many others is just looking for some cheap publicity in the media.

It has nothing to do with the flag, its symbolism, what it represents, or what it represented in the past.

The problem is with these spineless whores like Bubba Watson who want to erase history.  We should be EMBRACING history.  :patriot:

Its all pointless anyway, NOONE is going to wake up the morning after and say "oh thank god the original general has an american flag on it now, I just feel so much safer knowing in no longer wears the confederate flag"

Not many people today even know that car exists... or care

kab69440

My personal guess is that he is hoping some desperate bleeding heart will step in and offer him a stupid amount of money to buy the car in order to save it from being painted over.

JB400

If we, the people who are in support of the General Lee and the confederate flag, want to make a statement, the best thing for us to do is to display them, and to show proper Southern hospitality to everyone.  We can't be like the Black's, and  burn towns and police cars, or make heroes out of criminals.  We can't be like the Gays or the Atheists and protest either.  Best thing we can do, is show our real colors as the respectful and friendly people that we are, and to fly our flag just a little bit lower than the Stars and Stripes.

I don't think anyone IS offended over the flag.  At least nobody new in relation to the General Lee.  Nobody who wasn't already offended a month or a year ago.

The pulling of flags from Walmart, Ebay, Amazon, Warner Bros, Bubba Watson . . . as far as I can tell it's ALL been basically pre-emptive in fears of a backlash that has yet to show up.

There has been some real new outcry over the rebel flag staying at full-mast in South Carolina.  But that was obvious.  They were asking for trouble there IMO.

I couldn't agree more that's the only way to fight this kind of thing is to get our voice out. so many times we see the silent  majority being controlled by the vocal minority. That's the only way you can fight this kind of stuff is the throw it  right back in their face and not roll over cause once they take it from you , you can never have it back. And with this crowd,  it's never enough. first it's over the state capital then it's over the memorials then it's over the general lee your house or your car

The point about someone telling him to do that could hold water too.  He took a bunch of flack for his anti-gay comments not so long ago and I'm sure his press agent got on him right away with the GL thing when this popped up begging him to not say anything stupid.  Which of course he did anyway.

I have no doubt that Watson has gotten some phone calls from handlers & sponsors about the flag on his car in the last week or so.

For all w know he might be looking at a choice between removing the flag or losing $________ in endorsement deals.

As far as Bubba Watson and his General Lee are concerned, if he's going to paint over the flag then just repaint the car to its original T5 bronze, beat the shit out of it with a sledge hammer and dump the pile of shit where it came from.....buried in kudzu on the side of Georgia hillside.

Bottom line. That car without that flag is pointless. Kinda like when Nascar die cast collectors could not get their favorite cars with beer sponsors printed on them because they were technically toys. Can't let kids know that beer exists. Brian Grams from Volo auto museum is interested

Museum offers new home for golf star's 'Dukes of Hazard' car

Brian Grams doesn't need another bright orange 1969 Dodge Charger -- but says he's in a race against time to buy the first General Lee 01 car before its current owner, golf-pro Bubba Watson, makes good on his promise to paint over the Confederate flag emblazoned on the roof of the vehicle.

Grams, the director of the Volo Auto Museum, told FoxNews.com on Monday he believes the car is an iconic piece of television history that should be preserved in its current form and displayed in his museum. It might even go next to the other General Lee car that's on display -- and a crowd pleaser.

"It's one of the top five TV cars of all time," Grams said.

Grams said he reached out to Watson through social media and though he has not heard back, he's optimistic Watson will hear him out.

"He's up against a double-edge sword," Grams said. "A good solution would be to sell it to the museum. "

Watson, a two-time Masters Tournament winner, announced on Twitter last week that he was planning on painting over the Confederate flag with an American flag, amid controversy surrounding the embattled symbol.

Watson initially paid about $121,000 (taxes included) for the car in 2012.

The "Lee 1" was the first car built for "The Dukes of Hazzard" television show, and could be seen flying through the air during the opening credits of the popular sitcom.

After the show was canceled, the busted up vehicle turned up in a junkyard.

It was fully restored, put on the auction block and bought by Watson.

Watson's July 2 tweet -- "All men ARE created equal. I believe that so I will be painting the American flag over the roof of the General Lee #USA" -- went over like a lead balloon to many of his followers.

Chris Lawrence @Senator51 responded, "@bubbawatson. Unbelievable you would cave in to this nonsense. Sell car and donate the proceeds to a worthy cause if you want to feel good."

Fox Sports analyst Clay Travis went so far as to call Watson "an idiot and a coward," in a recent column.

Grams told FoxNews.com he isn't looking for a donation from Watson and is willing to "pay fair market value" for the car.

Grams already has on his lot one version of the "General Lee," which he calls "one of the staples" of his museum. His car -- "General Lee No. 8" -- was the last one built for the first season of the "Dukes of Hazzard." In all, 249 cars were made. Eleven remain in existence, Grams said.

The Illinois-based Volo Auto Museum also showcases more than 300 "classic, antique, muscle and Hollywood cars."  The Tinsletown trophies include the 1994 "Flintmobile" from the "Flinstones" movie, the 2004 Harley Chopper used in the movie "Ghost Rider" and the 2002 Aston Marton used in the James Bond movie "Die Another Day."

Multiple attempts to reach Watson for a comment by FoxNews.com were not immediately returned

Grams needs to update his GL registry.  There's more than 11 original GL's in existence.

What a load of horse shit ,  General lee #8 ha  ,  the car was never built by the Ga crew for the 1st season or made it on screen , it was built long after the show had moved to California by Don Schisler for his son.

Volo (Grams)  is responsible for a lot of  the misinformation out there concerning General Lee's  , i had caught Volo out before with a replica on Display with the one of 17 paperwork , guy there stated it was one of the 17 , after letting the Dodge Charger registry know about it , and Wayne contacted them , the paperwork was withdrawn and they had mysteriously found it in the glove compartment when the brought the replica .

They are less a museum than they are a dealership but I still hope they buy that car from Watson.
