Thought about adding one of these to the 440 I have in my charger. I have never heard of anyone putting a knock sensor on a 440. I looked at this unit online and it seems pretty simple. But can the sensor be installed on the side of my motor while in the car?

GM used a knock sensor that screwed into the coolant drain plug on the side of the block

I do not know the answer and am interested in hearing about anyone else's experience too.  What I heard was that some of the knock sensors were designed for specific sounds, so it would need to be what your engine made, and also that might pick up extraneous sounds valvetrain etc....

Maybe something worth asking the people who make them or others, but I do not know if this is actually the case.
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

I talked to the tech at the company in the link in my first post about this. I thought it would be an issue with my solid cam but he said you could set the frequency of the unit to take valve train noise into account. I have read that the sensor can be mounted anywhere. I have seen them in the intake valley pan of an LS chevy and also in the side of my vortec 350.  I'm going to try it, just kind of wondering if Anyone has an installation point cause my motor is in the car.

Knock sensor creates a voltage signal based on the vibrations caused by detonation. The computer uses this signal to retard timing when spark knock occurs.
What would be the advantage of a knock sensor on a vehicle without a computer?

That's what I was thinking.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

The unit can be used to power an LED for a visual indicator to warn of knock, they don't need to be fully intergrated with a management system.

I think they could be useful if you are on the edge or have a problem, I bought a system that powers a LED bar voltmeter to indicate the level of knock but I haven't had the need to install it. Too many bells and whistles can make you paranoid.

Anyone?

If I would have had a knock sensor in my Charger when I was dealing with my detonation problems, I would have worn the bulb out!
Not so anymore...

sounds like a handy tuning tool to have

What happened to doing it the old fashioned way? Costs you nothing and you dont have to worry about trial and error programming of the knock sensor on an engine that you may or may not have tuning issues to begin with?

you know, you're right. sorry. I'm used to all the new stuff I work on.   [work]
