Sooner or later, we all pay the man.  maybe for you it's the machine shop, the alignment shop, the body shop....and so on.  For me, today, it was the muffler shop.

In an effort to look "more stock" and to tame this car a bit, I have been busy.  I changed the steering box, valve covers, rockers, pushrods, put manifolds on it, rebuilt the steering column and put a tuff wheel in it.

I took it this morning to have the exhaust shop connect my nicey nice manifolds to my old exhaust system.  I am very pleased with the sound.  still just as loud, but not a cheap sounding loud like the headers, nice and deep now.  Here is a before pic:

I am gonna paint that cap tan and try to get the yellow lettering off my accel wires.  That may be as far as I go since I am starting with an orange engine, later dual snorkel and it's never gonna look bone stock anyway.  and then there is that fuel filter, perfrormer RPM, mighty demon, accessory fuse block, aluminum radiator, electric fan,.....and on and on.... but it still makes me feel fuzzy on the inside.

Paint the intake, and maybe score one of the round unsilenced 4 barrel air cleaners (I think MP sold out of the repops), and you would have to look twice to know it wasn't stock.

*"Build the biggest engine you can afford the first time."
*"We normally wouldn't use a 383 for this build, parts and labor for a 440 cost the same."

I was thinking about that and then I realized that it's a 68 with an orange big block.  The thing is I had to modify that dual snorkel to clear the hood.  I cut the bottom out of it and epoxied a 4" drop base onto it.  Don't worry, It was all rusted out and crappy, so I did not trash a nice rare dual snorkel...

I suppose I could just get another drop base and probably just drop a '68 unsilenced right onto it?

Chris,

I wonder if the drop base work with the Eddy style carbs? I forget how your Holley fuel line enters the carb but, the Eddy/Carter design along with the factory fuel line puts it at nearly the top of the carb. I hate the pie tin rubbing problem also.

Hey Chris, does your carb still have the choke horn on it ? If so this can cause problems because the lid is too close to the choke horn and will restrict airflow with the dropbase aircleaner assembly. If it's feeling sluggish try removing the aircleaner assembly for a quick test drive to see how it's behaving....you'll have your answer as to whether the new setup is creating some restriction pretty quick.  ;)

Crazy Larry

694spdRT,

Did you have anyproblems removing the headers?
I'm gonna have to tackle mine this Summer, and even though the headers are fairly new (2002) - some of the bolts have welded themselves to the manifold.
I imagine a professional is going to have to drill them out - since all of that is a bit over my head. Was that the same situation for you?

I always hated how the mopars have the two center exauhst ports so close together because the center heats up far more than the outside so those little center bolts go fast. I guess I put it off to long, that now if I want to use my own tools to change them out, the bolts will strip - believe me, I tried.

The base plate has releiefs cut into it for the Holley floats....you can turn it to fit the Eddy carb and might have enough room for the fuel line.  The Holley dual feed comes in at the top but angles down

anybody know of a set of wires that would look more stock?  I am not impressed with the parts store cheapies I have gotten in the past, they look stock enough, but the construction of the terminals was piss poor.

anyone?

I have been thinking of getting a correct style air cleaner for 68, but jesus christ!! have you seen the prices?  3-500!!  a new chrome one from MP is $125.  more reasonable, but I was hoping to find a beat up used one and refinish it since it's realy easy,

This is the one in my pic before I "fixed" it.
