McAfee plus I run Malwarebytes every once in a while.   Nothing will protect you if you get on the wrong site while surfing or open the wrong spam email.

just signed up for another three years ,its great has stopped all "bugs " so far  no problems in over 5 years and counting     :yesnod:

it stops infected emails etc from being opened and stops you going to infected sites ( get a little box explaining problem and gives you option of ignoring it   :slap: ) cant recommend it high enough

Avast.  Top rated by the CNET folks.

It's free.  And then add on Malwarebytes, Super Anti Spyware, Spyware Blaster, and CCleaner.  All 4 perform differently but are not the front line defense, Avast is for that.  All are free.

Avira rated one of the top free ones even better that AVG. Works really well and its FREE take it from someone who is a tech for a living. I also will use MalwareBytes and super anti spyware every so often to clean up any thing left. :Twocents:

I've ran Norton, currently running Mcafee. I've been told at minimum there's a 100 new virus a DAY. Nothing can keep up with it, luck of the draw. I've been bit a few times in the last 20 years for sure. IMHO at least the paid ones keep up with updates better than the "free" ones....  :shruggy:

I love it when people think they're "safe" just because they have a Mac... :D

I *usually* don't use anything and never get infected. I don't use IE ever. I also don't click on stupid stuff, visit sites I don't trust, open email from people I don't know, install "free" programs (unless they've been vetted and proven), or open random attachments. I do have a hardware firewall on my home network to cut down on "port scans".

Microsoft Firewall and Security Essentials are pretty good. Plus they're already installed on most systems and easy to keep track of. I am not impressed with Norton or McAfee at all. We have Trend at work and it seems ok but I fight it more often than it helps with anything (that may have more to do with corporate policy than the software though). I have used AVG and Avast in the past and was mostly happy.  AVG had some issues there for a while. NOD32 has a good reputation. Malwarebytes and others like it are for *after* stuff is already gone wrong. But they do a great job.

:iagree:

Microsoft's free products are good and I would recommend Symantec, Kaspersky and AVG (I've never tried AVAST). McAfee is something I would not recommend after it letting critters into a 10,000 node enterprise I used to work at twice. I also have to echo Troy and Bakerhillpins comments. No matter what product(s) you use, if you don't practice safe surfing, you will get infected. Delete e-mails you don't recognize, don't go to sites that are shady and use a browser with some anti-phishing and security features like Chrome. Chrome is the only browser I use (except at work when IE is required for certain enterprise apps). Oh, and patch your systems!

iMac no protection needed.

Windows 7, no antivirus needed.

The key to not getting infected is not downloading or clicking on anything that you know you shouldn't be messing with anyway.  I've run this way since 1998 and I've had a virus hit me once...

This.

Except the CCleaner so that.

Plus I pay for the 3 year, 3 computers plan Avast has/had.  Really economical when you remind them how long you've been with them.   :D   Avast won't let me open stuff I'm not suppose to so for me it's idiot proof.
