Who would pay 32.5 k for just a used engine. ?  It must have been on sale a long time to make one build a frame and radiator to make it sellable.

Out of interest though, if you had an original Petty car, how much more would the car be worth with an original Petty motor sitting in that engine bay???

It's amazing to me sometimes how many old Hemis are former Petty NASCAR engines.  Admittedly though this one has a new twist to it, it was built for 1969 and never used and was then given to Junior Johnson to use in a moonshine runner.  Pretty cool and so now it isn't just valuable if you were restoring a Petty car but also if you had a Junior Johnson shine runner.  Especially seeing as how by 1969 Johnson had been a professional racer and out of the moonshine trade for about a decade.

yeah , exactly  ,      ,  looking at the side of the block , I had always assumed that , blocks that were for GN type racing  , had freeze plug retaining straps & or screws /clips to hold them in place for a extra margin for safety ,  cant see any holes for said screws , although  if was never used for GN racing  , may be holes were never drilled     but ! thought they got the motors complete from Chrysler , unless it was the individual race teams engine guy , done this 

sounds like  grandnational Hemi   , through my  computer speakers  ,  having said that  , i'm far from a expert & only ever heard a GN hemi  , via the internet , not live so to speak

The cam, compression and open headers would give it that sound though.  I don't think it was conveniently changed to a Street Hemi, I think it always was and they conveniently added the story to help sell it.  Just my skeptics opinion though, for all I know Richard Petty used it as a coffee table in his office and Junior Johnson ran straight shine in it for fuel.

Petty did not design or own the Hemi.

so what would it have cost to have petty enterprises build you this motor back in the day        bet it was about equal (in 70's dollar value ) to what there asking today . has connection to jr Johnson to   hhmmm

I call  on both the Petty connection and the Johnson one.  Not sure what Petty would have charged back then but after 1970 (when this engine was allegedly assembled but never used) the writing was on the wall for the Hemi in NASCAR and Junior Johnson was long long long out of running moonshine so no need for him to need one then, especially with him never being much of a Chrysler guy.
Lets see the evidence before we take this as gospel.

As others have pointed out, he was done with moonshine about 10 years before this engine was built. And unless I was mistaken, he was even retired from Nascar before this engine was built?

I call BS also. but I have to disagree with you on Junior not being a Chrysler guy. I saw an interview afew years back where he claimed the fastest moon shine car he ever had was a 57 Chrysler!

Ok Junior himself stated he got out of the moonshine business after he won Daytona 500 in 1960.
