Advice on MSD IG Install Ballast Problems

I installed a MSD ignition control box, Blaster 2 coil, pro billet distributor, into my 1969 Charger. I found top dead center and everything, got it all into the car  butttttt,,,,, The car wont start with the ballast resistor disconnected. It only starts with it hooked up. And wen the cars running i unhooked the ballast and the car shuts off. I need some help getting the wiring back right. The previous owner had a red wire tapped into a green wire coming off the wire harness going into the positive terminal of the coil. So this was the wire i ran to the red wire coming from the MSD control box. Second photo.

Heres the coil  hooked up to the two wire pigtail from the MSD Box.

The other thing is, the previous owner rigged up a push button start. You turn the key on, then push the button to start. Im thinking this is something adding to my problem. Heres how he has the button hooked up. Hes got two wires running to the starter relay.

So how do i change this back to the factory way so that this car will start with the turn of the key? And did i tap into the wrong wire close to the ballast? Also i posted a video on  U tube. I was in a rush and said some wrong stuff in the video, and pointed to the wrong terminal on the coil so bear that in mind when watching. Also said the car wont start with the ballast resistor hooked up. I meant to say it will and that i should be able to without it hooked up. Sorry was rushing to keep the video short. The vid shows all the components.

have not got MSD yet , but its next on list to do on mine ,

you need to connect the 2 Ballast resistor wires together  , when running a MSD set up with their 12 volt coil  , providing its a un modified OEM  harness ,

looks like yours has been hacked & spliced etc by a previous owner ,    would not like to even guess what previous owners have done  etc ,  best way  take harness / s  out & un wrap them & follow the  wires  to what goes where  , & rewire /& or  replace harness as necessary  ,  only way you

will know whats what & how it should be

The brown wire on starter relay is a interlock so it doesn't start in gear .That goes to your trans neutral safety switch. If you make a jumper wire from that terminal to ground it will start in every gear. And you may even wont need the additional key push button switch set up[.To start it up

Your original underhood wires would be single blue wire at ballast key power .Is where I believe MSD taps in with a white wire .The other 2 wires on other side of ballast Dark Blue and Brown goes to Ignition 1 at key switch by factory harness. You should on your 69 voltage regulator double blue slide on terminal and a screw on green alt field. Is your alt a single field just a green wire and battery connection. Also you should check terminals and connection at the firewall bulkhead. That maybe why someone else ran additional wires. If you follow the msd site or on the unit the existing wires..I believe on of them maybe a red went to + coil.Havent hooked one up in quite a while .

Thanks for that. Will look for a gromet to make latter. Thats nothing to do with ignition, just a toy im hooking up to the car and since the heater box was out i ran the wire through there to be able to come back to it latter and hook up my toy to it.

this is what I was saying , that  needs to be done  with the STOCK wiring , when running a msd set up with a 12 volt coil  ,  join the Ballast resistor wires together ,   like picture blow  with  suitable gauge wire , or a suitable connector etc

just watched your video ,  is everything ok  HTC  , I can see smoke from the front passenger side ????  bottom picture ,  watch you video

LOL thanks. Naw its a mosquito coil. I noted that in the video. You light them to run the mosquitoes off. I even said that in the video. But yea thanks for that info. http://ll-us-i5.wal.co/dfw/dce07b8c-6cc5/k2-_17c80a64-6ab1-47ba-81c7-534e860cda2f.v1.jpg-cfbe4849f51f3946051a4552fc12831e99555fe6-optim-450x450.jpg

Tan top tell me somethin... Youre saying hook it up like the illustration you made. But the way i did it worked? I dont understand? But i will hook it up like that latter today. But I was looking at an old vid i made before the install and the car sounded better then. But when i started it up yesterday it sounded good too. Not like in the videos. So i played around with the msd box turning those dials, but i dont know what the hell im doing in that box lol. Any help? :icon_smile_blackeye:

:2thumbs:

pictures below are for the thin red wire from the MSD unit , connecting to a 12 volt  supply when key is  turned to  start & run , by passing ballast ,

on a OEM harness ,  no telling  what previous owners have done though to yours ,  that's the reason I mentioned unwrapping & inspecting it all , then you can be 100% sure whats what .

also no offence     , I would use proper connectors & or solder the wires etc    , those  twist connectors are ok , setting up & temporary connecting  , but  should not be used  a permanent connection  :Twocents:
