O.K. I had to go find her!!!  But I found a CHARGER_GIRL!!!  (that should be her S/N if it's not taken)!  How about that!  A REAL Charger-owning girl!

Folks she is from Indiana, and she cannot drive her Charger because her Wiring harness is TOAST.  She says she has a short by the Altenator...  I invited her here to see if we can find a Charger GURU by her...  We need her general area also to find a member, but she has to sign-up to give us that!  I also recommended http://evanswiring.tripod.com/ for a harness...

Well it's a shame that you don't live closer to me......I know of a few guys that are really good with wiring on the older mopars!

But since you're not.......good luck Gina......and speak up from time to time on the board.....not too many girls on here ya know!!!

You shouldn't have had to look far - she's already here... :P

I think smasherofall helped with the car some and Danny (69_500) is real close. I know we have some more Indianapolis members. I'm about two hours away so I haven't quite made it over there yet.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

yeah I thought she was a member already, I've seen that car before, name is angel or something similiar.

So you have a short, does it take long to drain the battery?

If enough of us get involved in this we should be able to figure it out, and electric stuff most times doesn't need much wrench turning.

It could be a ground issue, if you can post pictures of the engine compartment..we might see something or not. The thing is to get started and start weeding out the potential problems.

Not sure how money is for you but year one offers a replacement engine harness for around $100 and you can replace the other ones later. It might be expensive but buying a battery and\or playing "replace the part and hope" isn't any cheaper.

Hmmm... I think I see a few leg humpers in here.  ;D

Heh.   ;D

And the wiring truely is pure crap.  A guy I was friends with looked at it and told me the best bet was to redo it all.  He found live wires that were just hanging and I don't know.  He works electrical and he was just flabbergasted at the whole wiring of the car.  Said you could tell over the years the wires had been spliced for this and that.  The fuse box is melted...none of the gauges work...and I mean NONE of them.  Headlights and the wipers is about it.  Times when I drove it I would get a white wisp of smoke come into the car...by the steering wheel....and than a few weeks ago one of the wires that go to the alternator flamed up on me.  Scared me for the last thing I want is to lose the whole car to a fire along with my house.

The battery is cool though...has not drained it.  Just the smoke and fire issue makes it all point to a huge wiring issue.  Hence why that is the first thing on the to do things instead of getting the frame rails done.  No point in fixing the frame if the car electrical craps out on me totally and the car does catch on fire.  It is at this point not drivable and I do not even dare to start it.

I feel pretty lucky though for I have had people offer help on the car...smasherofall is one...and my neighbor does body work and already has told me he would do that.  Just cannot do frame work...which I have some plans on where to go with that.  My biggest thing though is to get it paid off than I will have more freedom on it.  And keep my main car out of the shop.  lol

The semester for college is done the first week of May.  Than my priority will be my job (uh yah right) and working on the car.  lol  The novel thing is a stress reliever.

just keep in mind, give us enough of a heads up and we will be there to help out.

Sounds like your best bet is to find somebody parting out a '68 - '70 and just buy the dash and engine harnesses from them.  If the wiring is *that* hacked up, it'll take somebody good with a schematic weeks to fix it to the point of it no longer being dangerous.

Mine melted the bulkhead connector when the fusible link gave up the ghost, but I was able to patch it to the point where mine was driveable again.  It sounds like yours is in need of more serious help.  :'(

You could always keep driving it, just leave the negative battery cable loose so you can remove it easily, and always carry a fire extinguisher.  :icon_smile_cool:

The dash harnesses are about $500, I replaced all 4 on mine, engine, front lighting, rear lighting, and the dash harness. About a $1000 for all of them.

Dark Angel, I'll bet your problem is in 1 of 3 areas...Bulkhead connector, starter switch, headlight wiring & headlight relay.

****Don't forget the ammeter gauge is probably toast as well.****

Charger Aficionado

Someone needs to post a link to that headlamp bypass schematic thing that keeps all the headlamp juice from going to the headlamp switch...  Or does the '70 have that problem as well???  I know my '69 sure did...  When she mentioned white smoke, that reminded me of it...

tan top

it's a lot of $$$'s in one go but if it were me i would replace with all new harnesses, because with 36 year old stuff  it becomes brittle, and prone to cracking.fix one short there is another waiting to happen! :brickwall: plus three decades of different owners splicing wires  in for radios  extra lights , different ignition systems , and who knows what, ??? you are better of starting with new stuff . i would also fit new voltage regulator / ballast resistor plus check out instrument cluster wiring and switches.

If you wind up needing any help working on that charger, feel free to ask. There are plenty of Charger owners here in the Indy area, as well as plenty of Mopar people

DarkAngel0816

Fire extinguisher sits on the seat with me when I have driven it!  LOL!  That has been covered.  But yeah...I do have a diagram and as soon as I am done with school in a month I am going to get work done on it.

I know it costs, but for me I rather buy all new wiring for I would feel more comfortable driving the car.  I did take photos of the engine bay and as soon as I get it developed...I will post it on here and point out the wire that did the fire show a few weeks back.  See if you all know what exactally it goes too.

Hopefully this summer we will run into each other at a show. My wife is always complaining that there aren't ever any women our age at a showl

DarkAngel0816

Hey 69_500 sounds like a good deal to me.  I plan on going to more this summer for sure around the Indy area.  So let me know if your wife and yourself go to any around here.  Even if it is without the Charger.

36 year old wiring sucks...but thanks for all the suggestions on what you would do and what you would look at.  I appreciate it!

And 2fast...my novel is one based out of the 1800's...more specifically the 1860's-70's.  Hence why I am taking a trip in June to Deadwood, South Dakota.  It is one that I will be using a fictional character with some nonfictional characters from that time.  I love history esp. history around the Wild West times.  I am trying to do alot of research on this novel.  And it is not going to be a love story persay.  Boring.  lol

Be careful with some of the "history" you hear in Deadwood.  One thing that sticks out at me is the supposed love affair between Calamity Jane and Wild Bill.  If you go look at each one's gravestone you'll see the age difference is huge.  She may have had a crush on him but I doubt he knew her hardly at all.  Another thing is the "chair that Wild Bill was shot in."  The saloon that the shooting happened in and the whole town burned down twice.  Not to mention the fact that it was probably chaos after Wild Bill was shot.  I really doubt that chair ever survived.

If you're looking for a good place to go to do some research head to the Adams Museum.  They have quite a record of the real history of the town.  You can pick up some books by local authors here too.  These books were written and printed in SD and don't usually turn up on the book websites.  They are full of good info.
When I was just a very young lad I looked up and told my dad, a bareback rider's what I wanna be.  I want the whole world to know about me.  In the rodeo arena I'll make my stand.  I wanna be a rodeo man.  I'll come flyin' from the chute with my spurs up high, chaps and boots reachin' for the sky.  Spurin' wild with my head throwed back, you'll ask 'Who's that,' well that's Bareback Jack.  You'll ask 'Who's that,' well that's Bareback Jack.

Hello.  Nice ride you got there.

If you're gonna drive it with the mentioned problems, I strongly suggest you get at least a couple harnesses replaced and even bypass that alternator gauge.  Get that power out of that cluster, a fire waiting to happen.
If you're not driving it I'd disconnect the battery while it sits!

Check out this thread on the '70 Charger Registry Board.  You don't want this happening.

Need ideas? Try watching the great western "Lonesome Dove" mini-series with Tommy Lee Jones & Robert Duvall. It's an 1860's Texas to Montana cattle drive story with alot of adventure. I watch it everytime I'm in the mountains for the weekend.

First, I guess I'll say welcome, or welcome back to the site DarkAngel, I've seen the name but Jude gave it a grand entrance.

Hey Mike, (AllBlueRT)

I missed that topic on the '70 site with the crispy Charger. Glad you posted it as a reminder for what can happen. I have a fire extinguisher in my Satellite & have always carried one for almost 20 years. I had a voltage regulator crap out on the way to Carlisle on a Friday night at 10 PM in the middle of nowhere. After I got off the highway & found a gas station open, the attendant said the service shop was closed. As I spoke to him the battery exploded. I was lucky there were no other damages or a fire, but it woke me up.

Now I need to have the extinguisher inspected or replaced & will buy a few more for the other cars.

smasherofall

none of her gauges or dash lights work, probably the a/h she bought the car off of just threw everything together well enough so it would run and drive so he could sell it, and didn't bother reconnecting everything. I plan on checking it out for her when our schedules coincide, probably take just a few hours to get it where it will be safe to drive. (I'm very good with wiring)    ;D

DarkAngel0816

lmao@smasherofall...yeah school will be done for me at the end of this month.  Yay!  Than I will be more open on the weekends.  Thank God!

Anyways the battery to the car is not connected.  Do not need to burn down the house with the car.  I almost had a heart attack when the car did spark up when I had it running awhile back.  Turned it off and grabbed the fire entingusher...but the only thing it did was burn through some wiring.  So yep...battery is not connected.

I have studied a lot of history...and I know that the whole thing between Wild Bill and Calamity Jane was more of a ten cent novel type romance...made up.  I do look forward to buying books out there from local historians and etc.  And yep...I do have Lonesome Dove.  I like to watch different shows/movies from that era to see how they write it.  Such as I did buy the first season of Deadwood (although the high amount of cursing makes me cringe lol).  Also "Into the West".  But I tend to read more...if anything.

I have always been interested in history since I was a kid.
