well the car has been purchased by a friend of mine, i have come to help get her running and driving for him. the previous owner said the engine had a performance rebuilt with only 500 miles before she was parked for 30 years in that storage unit, why did he park it...well i found the dash harness fried and it turned into a "ill get to it eventually type fix". he didnt lie when he said the engine was fresh. the performance intake and carb were stolen off the charger during its 30 year imprisonment so i just slapped a stock intake and demon on it for now, when i removed the valley pan the engine was super clean, fresh build with ported original 906 heads, the engine is numbers matching 440hp2 with matching 727 behind it. after fixing a few wiring issues, new fuel pump, new wires and installing a new ignition module she fired right up, no smoke, just a lopey purr and not even any leaks. i ordered a new gas tank, sending unit and seals to replace the old tank, obviously he didnt drain the tank and it was eatin up. i pulled the grill to fix a few broken pieces. hoping to get her burnin rubber by monday. just gotta go thru the brakes and new fuel line.

the guy paid $50 a month for the first 15 years and then 60 for the remaining 15 years.  so he had $19,800 in storage fees... :smilielol:

so doing the math he basically broke even on storage and gave the car away.

1970 dodge charger r/t
this charger is a running driving american muscle car with its original numbers matching drivetrain. she sounds good and burns rubber as it did 45 years ago. now it is a project car and still needs restoration work.
heres the story on the car...it was previously owned by your typical teenage muscle car guy who wanted to eliminated the a/c, put higher rear gear instead of the freeway flier, headers and had a performance engine built by a machine shop back in 1984. since the engine was built it only had 500 miles on it before the dash harness fried and the car was put in storage sometime in 1984. well...the car sat there for 30 years and was finally pulled out. the original intake manifold and carburetor were stolen while in storage so another factory intake with a demon carburetor was installed to get running. the engine was just as clean internally as it was when it was parked over 30 years ago and with only 500 miles on it still. she runs smooth with a mild performance camshaft muscle car lope to it, no smoke or leaks.
heres a quick breakdown of the goods and bads...

Sounds like he lost at least 30K on it, if the new owner bought it for   15-18K
Didn't someone add up the storage cost to be around 60K for 30 years ?  :scratchchin: :shruggy:

1974dodgecharger

does it come with title at all?  Usually original owner keeps title and impounder keeps car.

i found the wheel bearings shot on the right front, so those should come in tomorrow. then im going to weld in some new header collectors becasue the old ones are warped and has an exhaust leak that just pesters the hell out of me. once thats fixed then its time to sneak it onto the speedway for a few laps and burn some tires off for an ebay video lol

cbrestorations

didnt get the exhaust fixed yet but wanted to take it out for her test drive in 30 years, the demon carb would only work with the primaries, soon as cracked the secondaries open it would pop, fart and hicup so its gettin a holley tomorrow aswell as welding in new header collectors. still lights tire up easy with just primaries lol. attached is quick youtube videos

taking it to the circle track for cooler videos tomorrow, wanna get a full corner drift.

Many neighborhoods don't allow non running cars sitting in driveways, at least visible from the street.  My city will ticket you and eventually haul cars off if they aren't drivable cars.  So storage is the only choice sometimes, and yes storage costs, especially over long times.  That's why I built a 2nd garage in the backyard, but I spent 30k to store a charger that had spent years in the attached garage, then moved to a quanset hut tent in the backyard that lasted 10 years before it rotted the plastic covering, and moved to attached garage for another few years until I built the 2nd garage.  You have to be able to justify the cost of new structures, using a storage shed was actually cheaper than building a garage was, but I get to sit out there and watch cable tv, with ac when needed, and it isn't several miles away...no one is going to steal parts.

Looked like a decent price for a solid foundation for a build, a rebuilt motor is a benefit.
