storage fees rack up on this charger

this r/t charger has been sitting inside this self serve storage unit in the same spot since 1985, pretty cool to check it out. its a friend of a friends brother who parked it and has been paying storage fees for 30 years at $60 a month, was probly $30 when it was first put in there but still it adds up alot, gonna damn near break even when it sells lol.

VegasCharger

WOW 30 years! Let's just say for the benefit of doubt that storage started at $30/mo. and now $60/mo. then let's average that to $45/mo. x 30 years = $16,200

Yep, it being an R/T and clean sheet metal you're probably just about right.

Is that local here in Vegas Chris or in Cali?

cbrestorations

the car was supposedly bought new here in vegas but if it wasnt it sure spent most of its life sitting in the same spot here for 30 years

Should the hood pins be in back of the rubber hood bumper, like behind them?

Wow, that's in bad shape now. Wonder how it looked when parked?  :popcrn:

Here's a question, would you pay to park your classic/collector car? And if so, what's your cost threshold for a space?  :popcrn:

And would you be more inclined to "visit" your car if the parking storage was structured like a "clubroom" type of atmosphere?  :popcrn:
There are places which are like that. Several hundred/mo. + club fees. But have some decent perks, and a place to get away...

Get the vin for the 70 registry, & more Pict's if you can & if he will let you. Nice clean sheet metal as said before but what's been living inside, if anything. :eek2:.

Storage facilities like that are such a money sucker - they should only be used for very short term situations until a more permanent solution can be figured out. Here is an eye opener for those that have not pondered on this:

Say the monthly fee was $30 in 1985. Now it is $60. So it has gone up $1 a year over the past 30 years. Like VegasCharger said - $16K in money just gone.

How about we step it up a notch - Take that same amount of cash that was given to the storage facility, and invest it in good ole American stock. Starting with $30 a month in 1985, $31 a month in 1986, $32 a month in 1987 etc etc - for the last 30 years - he would now have a little over $100K to spend on a damn nice already done 1970 Charger R/T!

My father-in-law has been doing this for the last 30 years also - except he doesn't even have a nice restorable car in storage. He has boxes of books, old farm tools, furniture from the 80s, and other boxes of worthless junk in his storage bin.  :'(

One would think that when the owner put it in storage they were not thinking 30 years

It's just another example of procrastination. And doing nothing is not free.  Also what's up with the outside storage? That could be free in anyone's back yard. :slap:

Thats pretty cool, but i still wonder why he stored it, and never drove it  :shruggy:

HANDM

Reminds me of a storage lot in everett Wa, there is/ was two 53 corvettes or whats left of them, one a regular joe hardtop and the other a convertible race/ drag car with a full cage sitting uncovered and completely wasted. The hardtop was in a little better shape but when I tried to open either door they literally came off in my hand, and this was ten or more years ago......

Yup! Always the story with people that store their cars or just keep them sitting in their yard. My buddy and I used to drive around in high school searching for hidden muscle cars that we could knock on doors to chat with the owners (back when gas was cheap enough not to feel bad for just cruising around. ha) and that's always the storyline. 'I'm going to get to it one of these days' 'I have plans for it' 'saving up for the restoration'. poor neglected cars.

Ironically, after saving a 400HO from one of those owners my friend has sort of become that person.  :rotz:  He hasn't been in CA for a couple years while he's been gone his 400HO and 1980 3 series have both been sitting outside waiting for him to move back and work on them. Poor things are getting worse by the year.

And, he couldn't even pony-up for a car cover?  :shruggy:  Of course by this time the car cover would look worst than the car...sad.  Looks like it was a nice Charger when parked.... :brickwall:

How easy is it to remove that R/T emblem on the door, with the scoop on the door?

if you are looking at this you know what it is and what they are worth...its a true 1970 r/t XS29 dodge charger numbers matching 440/727 with 3.23 rear 489 case posi diff, a/c, power steering, power brakes. the charger has been sitting in storage since 1985, yes 30 years out in the desert sun. she was an original f4 green metallic paint with vinyl top. the car has since been painted red before parked and top has gone to shit. since it was a vinyl top car it does need a roof skin to be done correctly, rear glass channel is fine, other rust spots are center trunk and lower rear quarters, not bad but do have to mention it, it is a desert car so dont expect a rust bucket. before she was parked the engine had a mild performance rebuild with cam, springs, valve work, new bearings, ring and pump but only ran for 500 miles before being stored. since being in storage the intake manifold, carb and air cleaner have been stolen, so those are missing. i do have the fan shroud and front headlight doors that are missing in the pics, also all of the original 15" rally wheels go with. the hood has the optioned turn signal indicators. the interior will need a complete restoration, it is an original wood grain dash car and original radio
does come with it too.
price is 19k and that is firm. clean original pink slip from 1985

cbrestorations

merced is a town in california, that is where he add is posted

cbrestorations

well the car has been purchased by a friend of mine, i have come to help get her running and driving for him. the previous owner said the engine had a performance rebuilt with only 500 miles before she was parked for 30 years in that storage unit, why did he park it...well i found the dash harness fried and it turned into a "ill get to it eventually type fix". he didnt lie when he said the engine was fresh. the performance intake and carb were stolen off the charger during its 30 year imprisonment so i just slapped a stock intake and demon on it for now, when i removed the valley pan the engine was super clean, fresh build with ported original 906 heads, the engine is numbers matching 440hp2 with matching 727 behind it. after fixing a few wiring issues, new fuel pump, new wires and installing a new ignition module she fired right up, no smoke, just a lopey purr and not even any leaks. i ordered a new gas tank, sending unit and seals to replace the old tank, obviously he didnt drain the tank and it was eatin up. i pulled the grill to fix a few broken pieces. hoping to get her burnin rubber by monday. just gotta go thru the brakes and new fuel line.

1970 dodge charger r/t
this charger is a running driving american muscle car with its original numbers matching drivetrain. she sounds good and burns rubber as it did 45 years ago. now it is a project car and still needs restoration work.
heres the story on the car...it was previously owned by your typical teenage muscle car guy who wanted to eliminated the a/c, put higher rear gear instead of the freeway flier, headers and had a performance engine built by a machine shop back in 1984. since the engine was built it only had 500 miles on it before the dash harness fried and the car was put in storage sometime in 1984. well...the car sat there for 30 years and was finally pulled out. the original intake manifold and carburetor were stolen while in storage so another factory intake with a demon carburetor was installed to get running. the engine was just as clean internally as it was when it was parked over 30 years ago and with only 500 miles on it still. she runs smooth with a mild performance camshaft muscle car lope to it, no smoke or leaks.
heres a quick breakdown of the goods and bads...
goods...
clean title
real xs29 charger
rebuilt numbers matching 440hp2
fender tag still intact
original 15" rally wheels

i have the front grill and headlight doors, it was just not installed while pictured
good tires

the bads...

trunk lid has a damage

all work that needs done can be completed here at our restoration shop or take her home

i found the wheel bearings shot on the right front, so those should come in tomorrow. then im going to weld in some new header collectors becasue the old ones are warped and has an exhaust leak that just pesters the hell out of me. once thats fixed then its time to sneak it onto the speedway for a few laps and burn some tires off for an ebay video lol

didnt get the exhaust fixed yet but wanted to take it out for her test drive in 30 years, the demon carb would only work with the primaries, soon as cracked the secondaries open it would pop, fart and hicup so its gettin a holley tomorrow aswell as welding in new header collectors. still lights tire up easy with just primaries lol. attached is quick youtube videos

Lord Warlock

Many neighborhoods don't allow non running cars sitting in driveways, at least visible from the street.  My city will ticket you and eventually haul cars off if they aren't drivable cars.  So storage is the only choice sometimes, and yes storage costs, especially over long times.  That's why I built a 2nd garage in the backyard, but I spent 30k to store a charger that had spent years in the attached garage, then moved to a quanset hut tent in the backyard that lasted 10 years before it rotted the plastic covering, and moved to attached garage for another few years until I built the 2nd garage.  You have to be able to justify the cost of new structures, using a storage shed was actually cheaper than building a garage was, but I get to sit out there and watch cable tv, with ac when needed, and it isn't several miles away...no one is going to steal parts.

Looked like a decent price for a solid foundation for a build, a rebuilt motor is a benefit.
