K-frame bolt spins but won't come out

I have removed 3 of the four k-frame mounting bolts on my 74, but the fourth is turning but not coming out. It did back out for a while and then stopped, so I assume the welded nut broke loose. What is my best option for removing this? I've attached photos of both sides of the plate above the mount. Should I cut off the head of the bolt and remove the plate in the photos? Or, should I cut a hole in the frame rail directly above the nut? In the second option I can then get a socket in, remove the bolt and weld the nut. Which would weaken the frame rail the least amount? Has anyone had to do this?

I had that happen on mine. I shoved a big pry bar between the frame and the head of the bolt and had a friend put pressure on while I hit it with the impact wrench.

I'll give that a try. How did you weld the nut back inside the frame rail?

If it started comonf out and then started to spin. I would say the threads are stripped
. N which case the first thing I would try is the pry bar attempt . But if it does come out u will still have to tap some new threads and probably a new bolt

Hey don't go cutting into the rail now!  Let's see what else we can do first.

The pry bar trick works.  With enough pressure you force that nut against the rail and the impact gun swiftly removes the bolt.  IF it fails, you can put a reciprocating saw in there and cut the bolt, but make it a last resort because you want enough bolt left in the nut for the next step.

With the bolt in the nut you can move it around a little.  Drill a few holes around the bolt hole.  Pull the nut tightly against the inside of the rail and weld it to the rail through the holes.  One weld seals a side of the nut to the rail and closes that hole. 4 large enough holes around the bolt hole should do nicely.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

That's a great idea! I'll try that this weekend. I haven't had a chance to work on it, see "exploding rattle can" in the Car Guys Discussion section.

Make sure you use a air impact heavy duty gun too.
