Can I swap the top of a Carter AVS carb 4401 (68 383 AC automatic) with a Carter 4640S 69 (440 AC automatic car). The reason I ask is that the 4640 I rebuilt, and noticed that the factory setting has been adjusted. The carb stumbled a little off idle. I had the 4401 carb and it was in good shape with what appeared to be a carb top that had not been had the factory setting adjusted. So I used it. The car ran well for the first 20 miles and now runs like there is a lot trash in the carb. I need to take the carb off and clean it but was just wandering about how interchangeable the carb tops are.

Thanks

I think the 4640 is a 750cfm and the 4401 is a 600?  What do you mean by "Carb top factory setting"?

The 4640 is a 800 cfm and I think the 4401 is a 600 so I agree with you on that front. The screw that is adjusted by the factory that is not supposed to be touched is the one that I was referring to. I took my carb apart last night and found a gas logged float so took the floats out of the 4401 and used them in the 4640. So far everything is working fine but don't know if long term the floats are correct. Anyone know if the floats on the 4640 and 4401 are interchangeable?

Good question !
Maybe your OK ?

Shows the Kit # and Float as CK085 and F35 for the 4640
and,
Kit #CK56, but the same Float of F35 for the 4401

does this help at all ?, see here:
