Race Charger Door Project

I recently bought this NOS Charger door skin recently at a local swap.    The seller had three of them and this was the only one left by the time I arrived.    They had come from Nichels Engineering, who supplied all the race parts to Dodge and Plymouth circle track teams.   So, I thought it would make a great wall hanger done up as a 68-70 Charger or Daytona race car with the car number and driver lettered on it.    Here, my able bodied friend Chuck is modeling with it before going off to the dip tank to get cleaned up.   It is NOS with the part number on the back, but a little scaly in spots from sitting around for 45 years.

Aero426

Back from the dip tank and metal finishing some low and high spots.    You can see quite a bit of pitting where the rust used to be.

Aero426

Could be a purple #99 Charlie Glotzbach?

Very cool! It is amazing how stuff like that is still around. The front bumper on my Charger was NOS, still in the box and addressed to James Hylton. I used the bumper, but saved the address label as I thought it was kind of cool.

Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Possibilities.   Don White's 1968 USAC Charger.     Don will go down as having the most USAC victories with 53 wins.

I would like it to represent a car that no longer exists.

Don's Charger 500 would be ok too.

Two ways of looking at it since you already have a fairly large USAC presence in your garage, continuing the theme or countering it with a little NASCAR.   :scratchchin:

(personally I like the Don White idea though)

My dad always liked Don a lot.

I do have the actual #1 stencil for Don's 1968 door.     Although that car is not my first choice,  I think it leads the way.     No doubt it would be pretty cool to use the stencil again.      The stencil has small perforations along the outline.   My understanding is the painter applies some black talc to it to mark the pattern.

The 68 door also uses a handle, so the skin doesn't need to have any holes drilled in it.

Priming and blocking.

Great idea.
Looking forward to seeing the end result.  :popcrn:

Don's Ray Nichels prepared Chargers in the late 60's were a 1967 Dodge truck color called Mojave Yellow.     Back in the 70's, he was asked by a friend about it and responded, "It's a Dodge truck color.   Some indian name".    Later on,  Don must have switched to Y2 for the cars he fielded on his own.

Without a sample, Mojave Yellow is only available in Centari which is an old acrylic enamel.

Squirted.

Thought about having some patina put on.   But Don was a very clean driver.   His cars were always immaculate.   So I decided against the faux patina or aged look.

In other news, we will be taking to door to Keokuk Iowa this weekend for a Racer's Reunion.   Don should be there, and I expect I will be able to ask him to sign the door.

Here we are bench racing with Don in his office.   He is 86.    His memory is pretty sharp.

Aero426

Great head shot of Don at the top of his game.

All very cool Doug. That sign painters workmanship is pretty damn awesome as is the project itself. Don should be very pleased. I think a video of your unveiling to him would be in order.

Must the door not be a bit more white? It looks yellow now? :o

Who says it has to be white? It's the original yellow color.

Yes, that is what was used.   I could only get it mixed in Centari without having a sample.
