Well I decided that I didn't want to be the "I'm going to fix it someday" guy so I've decided to sell my 69.
My question is that I bought it in the early 90's and the owner signed the title over but I haven't signed it on the buyers line, would I need to get it in my name before selling? Open to any input....

Thanks

lukedukem

I did that as well on my jeep I bought back from my cousin. There should be a place to put a date as well. I was told when I go get it out in my name to put a date on it close to current date. That's Texas though. Not sure about your states

KS and it was early 90's ....it's such a long time back when we had to have titles notarized.

That should be considered an open title and the buyer can sign it.   :2thumbs:

I hope that's the case, if not I've heard taxes need paid from the date signed.
I just couldn't imagine when someone finds an old car somewhere that's not been tagged for years that someone has to pay back taxes..... I like the whole idea of the open title ready to sign.  :yesnod:

I've never heard of that but I Suppose when it comes to a government authority trying to come up with ways to fill the coffers you never know.

GTP1500

funny when I have been at the DMV on three separate occasions taking care of other business I ask about it and they cant give me an idea on the $ amount, I often wondered if I was standing there ready to get it in my name how they would have figured it then.

Taxes? --Which state or states require a tax be paid on an old car?

In Oregon I have to pay a tax on the (counties) value of my (paid for) home. I guess they think that even though I paid for my home with after tax money I should continue to pay more every year for ever just because. :shruggy:

Is this the same kinda thing for old cars in some states?

Hmm :scratchchin:---could this be some part of the reason cars hide in barns?  Could they be seized and sold for taxes owed like can be done with my home if I didn't pay? :shruggy:

Just thinking, wondering, and venting :slap:---So what's next-- a tax on my (non electric) lawn mower?--- :brickwall

GTP1500

My county said I'd have penalties and back taxes to pay starting from 1992 to now, the neighboring county said they would only go three years back.... Should be the same state rules just misinformed DMV folks.

Did the previous owner date the title when he signed it ?  :scratchchin:

How much do you want for it ?  :shruggy:

Called "jumping title" around here.   Technically not legal, but it's done.   I saw it become an issue once in a case of buyer"s remorse.

GTP1500

Unfortunately it is signed and notarized. Title jumping doesn't sound like a good idea.
I haven't decided if I should put a price on it and put on craigslist or auction on ebay.

What state?

DMV is a Gov run entity in any state and therefore cannot be relied on for accurate information or bottom line (where one stands) information. I've been told by a judge in court that I need to comply with whatever DMV says.

Aside from the tax topic but about the DMV.-----I have a 69 coronet that I have had for 35 years. When I bought insurance (before I drove it) and got current registration. I encountered on intrusion from DMV.
They did a random check of insurance coverage. It showed a non covered period of time and sent me a letter of suspension of my drivers license.
My insurance agent was at fault for this but I spent hundreds of dollars and time in court to unravel all this and DMV was never in any way helpful. I had to buy special insurance for a year on top of my regular (full coverage) because of this.

I feel the need to repeat --- that when in court about this the judge said----Do not neglect what the DMV says you need to do!!! Right or wrong is of no matter. :nana:

Kansas...... I don't have any faith in my DMV, when I purchased a truck I had a $13,000 trade in, when I went to get my tags and pay taxes they tried to tax the trucks full price, I had to argue for ten minutes that I only pay tax on the price minus my trade in, she finally went to her supervisor and it was done correctly. Another truck, I was sold a bogus warranty that I had removed but they charged me tax on the $3,500 for the removed warranty. Later I was reimbursed but its like that almost every time and why its hard for me to take their word for anything.

The answer depends on your State, or even more so - the State (or country) that the buyer is from. If it's relatively easy for you, I'd suggest transferring it into your name to make it attractive to the widest range of buyers. The statement "Clear title in my name" is a helluva sales tool.

The term around here for buying a car and then passing it along without transferring title is called "curb-stoning", and it is illegal (though not really enforced much). If I buy any car of any vintage without a clear title I have to have to have it inspected by the State Patrol and wait 3 years to get an actual title. If your title is not clear to me as a buyer, you may be trimming people like me out of the market.

I'm actually going through this right now with a junker that was last titled in an adjacent State. It's a pain in the azz. If a car I'm looking at has a title that is questionable, I'm not bothering unless it's a smokin deal.

So I called the State DMV and was told I need to contact my county for an idea of late fees or penalties. The State lady did tell me since its an antique I could apply for a non use antique title.

I call my local DMV and was told "that's going to be hard to figure and our lines are long, so it will be next week before we can figure it out...we will call you."

Hindsight 20/20 in 1990 I would have put it in my name........

It's been so long that it should be out of the system.  Just go in and file for a lost title.  Problem solved.    :Twocents:

I'd imagine that it would have to be sent to the the guy that I purchased it from and hope he "chose" to sign the new one to me.

The state informed me that as far as they're concerned it belongs to the guy from 1990, so I'll end up paying the penalties and just do it the right way then sell it.

Most states didn't have penalties until the last 5 or 10 years, so they may not be to bad.

GTP1500

Tomorrow I will be going to get my title taken care of....
After making a few calls and pinning them down they looked in to it and my best bet seems to be an off road antique title, only goes back three years on that one. :2thumbs:

Cool.  Shouldn't be that bad then.   :2thumbs:

Sorry for the Highjack of the thread, but Wow that sounds like a PITA... Kentucky you just get a title only and then don't have to worry about insurance. I've owned my charger for nine years now and just pay about 5 bucks in tax every year since the car isn't registered for road use.
