I currently live in Indianapolis and I'm looking to move to the country. I was wondering what other members commute times were. I'm looking at maybe 1 hour to work.

Not me.  6 minutes.  It just about kills me.

In days gone by I had a full hour commute.  It wasn't worth it.  Don't miss it.

I'd recommend less time on the road to maintain your mental health.

I know guys that drive two hours to work ONE WAY.  No disrespect to people that choose to live this way, but I have to ask WHY?  Life is too short to spend it driving in a car.  I guess if someone doesn't mind it, it's ok.  Me?  I used to live 15 feet from my place of work and just walking there killed my soul a little bit, every step of the way...

My commute is 9 blocks..... About 1 minute.

I think it depends on your situation and probably also the drive and the house.  I live a mile from work and do not use a car on a regular basis.  My dad decided to live far from work when I was a kid and probably had an hour + commute when I was a kid.  I don't think he went in every day, and it was far enough removed (and on the water) that I doubt he would have traded it.  So my guess is that only you can tell.

Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

Ever since high school I've had 45-60 minute commutes. I always liked living away from it all though. Now I work in the suburbs and have moved closer so I'm still not in the city but my commute is 12-18 minutes depending on traffic. I feel spoiled now and every time I look at getting a place farther out it just doesn't have enough benefits to make me move. I will one day when I find the right place but I'm pretty happy now.

currently my Home --> Work --> School --> Home commute is 46 miles round trip in L.A. Traffic.

30 mins to work in the morning.  (8 miles)

1 hour to school in the afternoon. (15 miles)

30-45* back home in the evening. (23 miles)

*this may take up to 1.5 hours on days where im done with school just as rush hour traffic picks up,at which point I just use pubic transportation (subway) to bypass the worst part of it.

Sometimes it's all about real estate values. For example, some folks who work in the San Francisco area can't afford homes there so they buy affordable homes two hours away.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

When living in Honolulu my commute was about 15 miles, but could take up to an hour, depending on traffic, hated it.  When we finally got off that rock and moved to 45 acres of woods in Washington, the commute increased to about 40 miles, but the driving time was less.  Loved it.

My longest so far has been 2' 45". As an operator you have to go to where the work is. I'm currently only about 45" from home.

I am also about an hour north of atlanta, where about's do you live Beav??? I only drive about 20 to 25 min's to the shop but I don't work at the shop. It's another 15 min's across town to the plant that I usually work at. Sometime's I have to drive about 2 1/2 to 3 hours if I have to go out on a road call to one of our far off customer's and then it's that long of a drive back home. Have made that trip alot over the past 6 month's sometimes three times a week but lately it has slowed down there I guess so I haven't had to make the trip but once in the past few weeks...

My longest commute was 2-1/2 hours each way or 5 hours of driving for 8 hours of work.  Thank God I don't have that job anymore.  My commute now is about an hour each way or 2 hours of driving everyday (6 days a week).  Our work week is 5-12s(Mon.-Fri.) and 1-8(Sat.)

Well I live 45 minutes southwest of Indianapolis, and work on the far Northeast side of Indy (fishers). Have live in our house now for 5 years. It really is not that bad of a drive, unless it is during rush hour, or a holiday.

My drive times are not fixed due to the nature of my work. The most common drive time is 90 min one way and I've come to value that time as part of my waking up to the day in front of me. I let my internal auto pilot handle the commute as I relax and organize the tasks in front of me.

I did have a job (three weeks) that called for two and a half hours one way drive. In a case like that it's a tough call about getting a hotel vs the drive. Especially if the job is only an 8 hour job.

For those that have long commutes at a regular job---That time on the road is not lost time. Our awake time and where our mind takes us is up to the individual.  Think of those whose job it is to drive only for their job.

What we do with our time while we are awake is our life. I see no reason to think of commute times as being a part of our lives lost. How we use our awake time is our life.
