Where did the R/T badging and stripes come from? Not original!

Al

1968 Dodge Charger, 383, UU1

six-tee-nine

Howcome you see every single Charger with an unrestored dash cluster has a faded speedo face plate and this "survivor" does'nt.

Another thing bugging me is when you see GG's name added to an advertisement, the price triples....

IMO just someone who partially restored this one but did'nt want to spend the money on new paint.
I think we are going to have to sit this "survivor" era out till they are really gone so sellers will stop this crap themselves....

As a side note I think it still is a very good looking car that deserves a good home but I guess at that reserve price it wont go anywhere....
Greetings from Belgium, the beer country

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

We've discussed this car before have we not?

1970gator

This is nit picky to be sure, but at the very least that trunk has had some fresh paint applied.  The rust stains on the bottom of the trunk mat appear to correspond with the rusty, rough places on the trunk floor, but they are bright gold rather than nice rusty brown.  Though the originality may be a bit embellished, I'd still park it in my garage!

I've seen the "curley" at the top of the grease penciled "C" on broadcast sheets from other 69 Chargers (here's once from Nov. 20, 1968).  Is there a significance to that or was there one guy doing a lot of cars who had unique handwriting?

Yessiree, looks like old "curly" with the uniquely formed "C" on Broadcast Sheets was doing all of them ?

Here is mine, same / same distinctive "C" as yours, and done the same day Nov 23rd 1968 by "curly" at work, same day as the one in the Charger Ad.

It is interesting how the discription never calls the car an R/T, but never mentions the R/T headlight tag or the tail stripe. I guess that way if a newb buys it and is surprised to find out later it's not a real R/T, the seller can always claim he never said it was.

Just because its pretty, doesnt mean its been restored.

I should go pull my 2nd Broadcast Sheet above the Glove Box, and see if "Curly" wrote on it.
I "felt" it there by hand a couple of years ago....
but I never pulled it for fear of tearing it or screwing it up, because I figured one day I would carefully remove the glove box itself to access it, so as not to damage anything.

"Curly" was a busy guy ! Who'd have thunk 47 odd years later "Curly" would be notable ?

I believe everything in the ad to be true....oh, wait...I need to go offline for a while as I see a couple of black helicopters hovering over my house.

(Very nice car, but there are many questions......)
1970 Daytona Charger SE "clone" (440/Auto)
1967 Charger (360,6-pak/Auto)
2008 Challenger SRT8 BLK (6.1/Auto) 6050 of 6400

Ghoste

Which is interesting because the ad states "no dreamers".

myk

The seller and the ad are targeting buyers that don't know any better.  Unfortunately, there are plenty of uninformed people that are just too willing to part with their hard earned money...

Troy

What am I missing? The seller lists the VIN and clearly states it's a 383 4bbl PLUS there's a pile of documentation - none of which says it's an R/T. In the ad text he refers to the car as an "SE". He does mention "RT/SE" clearly as a comparison. If someone were trying to be sneaky I'd say this is possibly the absolute worst example in history.

There's a badge in the grill and a stripe - something we've discussed a million times (it seems) as being ridiculously easy to reverse. What's the problem?

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Ghoste

I think its the"original" part that is being questioned.

68pplcharger

lol If you look at the end of the add he lists the three changes done to the car. Might be over priced, but a garage kept car in San Diego( or any dry area of Cali) would look about this good.  :Twocents:

The quarter panel to roof seam is very visible, in first pic.

It is, but I've seen some others with pretty bad roof seams from the factory.  :shruggy:

:coolgleamA:  your got one on top of the glove box liner also  :o   good stuff , ( only had one in mine rear seat back )   be careful pulling the glove box liner , should you decide to retrieve it ! , its a  pain  :icon_smile_blackeye:  , you have to squish the liner to fit it through the glove box slot in the dash frame ,   doing so the top edge of the glove box liner  scrapes the  top edge of the dash glove box opening ,   easily rip or damage broadcast sheet  , may be with a mirror or something see how its attached at the top etc & go from there  :scratchchin:

the liner  comes out at a angle  , right side  corner comes out first , & goes in last ,

It was an option as far as I know...

Ghoste

Bright exhaust tips were standard on the RT, except in California of course, and were N/A on the XP Chargers.

myk

What did California cars have instead of those bright tips?  Turn downs, I'm guessing?

Ghoste

68pplcharger

Good to know Ghoste, would a dealer install them if a customer wanted them anyway?

Ghoste

I'm sure a dealer would do just about whatever it took to sell a car.
I think for California it might have been different for the dealers though because that was a noise pollution thing so they would have been creating an illegal car?

hemigeno

Didn't California-sold hemicars still get the chrome tips because of the resonators?  Seems like I've heard that was the case...

Ghoste

Oh?  I haven't heard that.  Interesting, anyone else know about it?
