OK we know there's a difference (71's fully vented - 74 none) but is there a time frame that the switch over to the new style was made? did any late build '72's have '73 hoods for example ? any guess'?

71 got full grill but lates got them with a small gap in the middle... the way the 72s where made.

Then 73 got two small grilles sections... about a foot or so on each side. Then 74 no grilles

There were cross overs - at least I can vouch for 1973-1974. I owned two 74's in which both were built with 73 hoods. Both had original paint when I got them and the correct emissions decal on the underside for the cars. One was a factory 440 Rallye and the other a factory slant 6 - both quite rare on the opposite ends of the spectrum.
The Rallye was actually built in January (middle of production), so how it ended up with a 73 hood that late in the run is anyone's guess.
