Oil pressure sending unit

I suspected that my oil pressure sending unit was leaking, so I replaced it with a new unit from NAPA.  It's part #OP6603 (echlin) and looks indentical to the old one.  The car has always had excellent oil pressure and the day before replacing the part, it went right to 50lbs after a cold startup at idle.  Now with the new part, under the same scenario it only goes to 34lbs.  I was able to get it to 38lbs by revving it up to 3,000 rpm.  Something's goofy with it!  Anybody else had problems with these things?

get a manual gauge & hook it up temporarily & compare it to your oe one.

I installed 3 different sending units with the same results, now I have a mechanical gage under the dash.

Why is everything junk these days?  Does a mechanical/manual gauge involve running a oil line to the dash area?  I don't think I could buy into that.....

What is the psi rating on the new sending unit? Some places say it is for a 440 but the psi rating is 100 psi, charger gauges need the 80 psi units.

you can buy an electric one, autometer is very good,or just get an inexpensive manual one  to compare   :shruggy: & also try a different brand of sending unit,

Good point!  Although I can't find it now, I think I saw something about this unit being good for 90psi....

hook a mechanical gauge to the other oil port....you can just leave it under the hood for testing

Ok, the one I have IS rated at 100lbs.  I cannot find anything on line rated at 80lbs.  Do you have a part# and source?   Thanks.......

OP6603 is supposed to be a direct replacement for Mopar 2495222 which is the sender P/N for a '68-'70 Charger.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Bob,

Several years back when i was completing the resoration of the 68 i purchased sending units (oil/water) from Rich Ehrenberg on his E-bay store. The factory guages read correct and i have a set of Autometer electric guages on the car as backup. The stock and Autometer guages read identical....so I have to think that the stock guages are working fine with Rich's sending units.

I have verified the engine temps with my infrared heat gun and those read identical to the guage(s). I have not verified oil pressure with a third (mechanical) guage and see no reason to do so. I'm very confident the readings are correct because they correlate with the pressures we were seeing on the dyno when the engine was broken in and tuned

It sure is frustrating when sending units don't work as they're supposed to. The fuel tank sending unit fiasco is another example of a poorly executed reproduction part.  :brickwall:

I'm using the same one Ron suggested above. The readings are close to my mechanical gauge that is hooked up.  :2thumbs:
