Oil pickup problem ; help needed!

Mr. Lee

Hi guys, I bought myself a new oil pickup and a new oil pan to replace my stock parts, but the oil pickup does not fit. I used the "search option" but I can only find simulair topics regarding a 402 oilpan, but I've got a 187 oilpan. Well, here's the story step by step:

1) I have a 1972 H440 RB engine:

2) I bought a stock oil pickup: http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/slp-224-15055  And a new stock oilpan: http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/sum-g3543

3) When I mount the new oil pickup with the new oilpan or with the old oilpan, there's a gap between engine and oilpan because the oil pickup touches the bottom of the oilpan. When I mount the old oil pickup, both old oilpan and new oilpan fit like a glove. Inside of the old and new oilpan vary, but when mounted in combination with the old oil pickup that's no problem. Like I said, I have a 187 oilpan:

4) So problem must be the new oil pickup. I checked how much of the oil pickup screw-tread gets in the mountingspot; I taped them when they where mounted but both old one and new one get in equal. Also when the old one and new one are lying side by side they look the same, but mounted the new one gives the problem. Only thing that varies is the screw-tread from the new one being longer, but then again, they get in equal so that can't be it can it?

5) I used the "chat" from Summit, and the employe told me I have to use this one: http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/mel-63-s3   Or this one: http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/mil-18660    Both replace the stock oil pickup, but so is the one that I have  :shruggy:

So guys, tell me how to solve this problem, wich oil pickup do I need to mount in combination with my new oilpan? Thanks  :2thumbs:

Hi, the new oil pickup is hitting the bottom of the new pan, but also hitting the bodem of the old oilpan. When the old pickup is mounted there is no problem.

the screen housing can be gently bent to clear, use some clay & check the clearance after you bend it, it needs about 5/16, also if you use a windage tray you will get more room for the pick up

Like Charlie said ,
or you could tap more thread onto it and trim the excess,
that way it will screw in slightly higher
mine I heated it up with the oxy and gave it a couple of tweeks

So just bent the screen housing up by hand?
And how much you mean with 5/16?  We messure in centimeters here so I have to convert your figure. I guess it's 5/16 inch?

Thanks.

block of wood, dead blow hammer or your hand, 5/16 inch is right at 8mm between the pan & the housing of the screen, so the oil can be sucked into the screen with no resistance.

Hi, the new oil pickup is hitting the bottom of the new pan, but also hitting the bodem (sic) of the old oilpan. When the old pickup is mounted there is no problem.

The pickup is supposed to gently touch the bottom of the pan, service manual even says so.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

it depends on how the pick up is made, most aftermarket pick ups need a gap. is his new pick up made like the oem one? show a picture of them of the screen side.
if i put mine against the pan is could not get any oil.

You can put that pick-up on the bottom of the pan

500" NA, Eddy head, pump gas, exhaust manifold with 2 1/2 exhaust with tailpipes
4150 lbs with driver, 3.23 gear, stock converter
11.68 @ 120.2 mph

Just noticed that the 187 Pan has a notch pattern that looks like is clearence for something(steering linkage)? Will the new pan have to have this.  :shruggy:
