Have I found Dutton Flats?

From Dirty Mary Crazy Larry...

If you have the DVD, fast forward to the 51 minute mark. They are in the Impala and cross some train tracks and pull into "Dutton Flats" where the flea market is. At the 52:42 mark you can see a "STATE HWY 88" sign in the background. Forward up to 53:31 and you can see what looks like the same sign (with "STATE HWY 88" on it), but at more of an angle so you can see the cross street of "SIXTH".

Well I checked on Google Maps and found state highway 88 in California, and I went along it and found one cross street of "Sixth" between Stockton, CA and the Nevada border.

Compare for yourself with the movie and it looks like the same spot!

Switch to the satellite view and you can see what look like where train tracks used to be. So I'm thinking they were coming from the south, went north over the train tracks and turned left into the long parking lot (wasn't a paved parking lot in the movie) where the flea market was. Even comparing the trees in the background shot looking south across the train tracks, they look pretty close.

If anyone lives close to this area it would be cool lif you could drive over there and check it out in person and take some pictures of what it looks like today if it is the spot.

Crazy Larry

I'm not so sure that is a 1968 Charger in the pics on the previous thread.

I know IMDB.com and some others have mentioned there were three Chargers used in DMCL, 2 '69 Chargers and a '68.
The only scene that has a possible 1968 Charger is when they meet a police cruiser, and Larry ends up bumping him into a small pond. During that sequence, the front is obviosule a 1968 front grille - but the side marker ligths and rear end is still '69 style. This wasn't a very small film, it did cost a few million to make and the filmmakers were pretty good - so for them to start the production with two '69's and a '68 is a little bit of a stretch.

If you watch the scene again, all that is 1968 about that Charger is the grille. Maybe I missed something, but the marker lights and tail lights ar 1969. It looks like they probably had an accident off camera and had to do a last minute repair - and all that was available at the time was a 1968 grille. So they had to roll the cameras that day with the '68 grille only to switch it back to a 1969 for continuity purposes when a '69 grill became available.

From the evidence of the scene that was shot and the fact that these were Hollywood filmmakers - that looks like the more likely story. I believe DMCL used 3 1969 Chargers for the shoot.

Ghoste

Well, that's going to give me a good excuse for a frame by frame re-watch tonight. ;D

FastbackJon

After they hit the red truck in the orchards they have a low rear shot of the Charger that is obviously a '68.

The valance panel is missing the round reverse lights. The taillight panel has clearly been modified to have the '69 taillights, but it doesn't look 100% factory correct around the edges. And to top it off, the car has '68 round side marker lights.

I think I remember seeing the '68 pleated seats too in one shot, but I don't remember which one.

Ghoste

Well I don't see the 68 side markers (are you looking at the "440" in the stripe?) but your other points are pretty apparent.  It also seems to have the rollbar of the car used for the "sailor" scenes.

Blown70

I see what I believe to be the 68 sides and certainly do not see a 69 side marker.  I do not know.

In what scene?

From my expierience with shooting with Chargers in movies - or any stunt cars for that matter. Sometimes, last minute repairs have to be made in order to keep the camera rolling and that is where continuity errors arise. I still have yet to see 1968 rear tail marker lights in the movie and also all the door locks are in the '69 position, as opposed to the 1968 far back at the ends of the door.

Anything small - like a rear valence, or a fron grill - may have been 1968 because that was what was available for cheap at the last minute because producers are always lloking to save money.
But using a completely wrong year car would never have been a decision of the film company.

Blown70

I was posting in reference to the above picture.  However this topic really falls into my, WTFE file.

Here is the shot of the "1968" used - it only shows up in one scene - at I think I see a '69 marker light on the passenger side fender.

There are better frames in the movie to see more accurately that they used 69's with 68 parts to make repairs of damage from off camera accidents.

Maybe when I have more time, I'll start a whole thread with screen captures to try to make my case - it can be like a DC.com trial - and ya'll will be the jury.

Well if you watch the movie and not just the one frame I posted, you can clearly see the '68 marker lights in the stripe behind the "440" in that scene (1:13:47 mark).

And just before the Charger rams the cop car into the stream, when the Charger is on the higher dirt road, and the cop car is on the lower parallel paved road, there is a shot looking up across the hood/driver area of the cop car to the Charger, and the Charger has the '68 marker lights, no reverse lights in the valance, AND '68 Charger taillights. This is about the 1:09:37 mark.

The '68 looks like it is missing the Charger scripts on the sail panel as well, but so is the '69 non R/T car we see going around the corner at 1:10:38.

they definitely had a 68. in that tail panel shot the reason it looks so funny is because it is surrounded by the 68 only taillight trim that goes around the tail panel. now at first the grill theory could have and does look to be somewhat correct.. but i KNOW that is a 68 tail trim, and looks liek the 68 tail panel was cut out at the taillights to house the 69 lights.. which would give it that goofy looking back end look.. also no lower valance back up lights.. i mean come on. they wouldn't go put 68 tail trim on a 69 charger.. that is the dead giveaway if nothing else.. look close.. even the C pieces beside the taillights are still there

I'll have to recheck that scene then - I just watched it last week and I remember watching that scene with the whoel 68/69 thing in mind. I'll rewatch and look for screenshots of the tailights though.

great observation there - do you remember what scene has the close-up of the taillight panel that you are referencing?

:iagree: it looks like  modified rear of a  68  charger to me , i think why  you cannot see the marker light is may be the film crew covered it up with black tape or something ,and you would not see it against the black stripe .
i might be totally wrong but i think i saw a original DMCL poster with Susan George sitting on the chargers roof  that had a roll bar and  pleated 68 seats , i think also  the door lock buttons were at the end of the door, as in  a 68
good idea Crazy Larry can't wait :scope:

Ghoste

I seem to recall a scene in the movie with the door locks at the back but I'm not certain enough to say for sure without watching it again.  I do have pretty much every poster and lobby card they made for the movie including a Japanese program so I'll try and look through that stuff for a shot of the interior.  An interior photo would almost seal the deal.
Of course, a still photo could have just been a 68 parts car that was used for promotional pics. ;)

FastbackJon

So is no one in the area close enough to check out the spot I found?
