Does anyone know what the "2" is on my '67 440?  I believe the 1017 is date the block was manufactured, October 17th of 1967.  Thanks!

10 17 is the date the engine was finally assembled (October 17, 1966) , the 2 means it was built on the 2nd shift (day shift).
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks John.  So the C is a 1967 block but it follows the model year? 1967 models started being manufactured in August of 1966?

Yes, the date code on the block is the model year not the calendar year.

I don't want to hijack this thread but my question is related.  Does anyone know what it could signify if the block ID pad is unstamped?  Were warranty engines stamped?

John_Kunkel

A bare block from the parts room (doesn't have to be warranty) would not be stamped because, since it was never built,  there would be no build date.....exceptions would be symbols for oversized cylinders or oversized lifter bores. A parts room engine or long block would be stamped.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
