69 Charger - Brand new M&H wiring in the car
Gauges all work, clock does not (replaced with quartz)
New circuit board, old voltage reg
Dash lights do not work
Turn signals & brake lights work
When I turn on the headlight switch, the 20a fuse blows (cig lighter/tail).  Headlights & brake/turn signals still work, no running lights.
Did a few tests:
Disconnected cig lighter, blown fuse
Dimmer switch was rebuilt & installed, still inop.  Disconnect dimmer, blown fuse.
Anyone have any ideas?  I've read all the posts...maybe the cluster ground?

Sounds like a ground somewhere.  Unfortunately you will need to check them and make sure they are good and tight.

Checked every ground, even took the dremel to them & ground them down to bare metal.  All are tight.  I added an extra ground from the cluster to the dash frame.

Still blowing that fuse.  Is it possible that my headlight switch is bad?  Any other ideas?  I'm obviously not an electrician....any help appreciated.

A383Wing

does fuse blow when you turn headlights on or just turning parking lights on?

Shredthepow

Good question, I'm not sure.  I always just flip the headlight switch all the way.  I'll try it again and get back to you.

Plumcrazy

Divide and conquer.

There's a connector for the rear wiring next to the parking brake pedal.  Disconnect it and see if the fues blows. If it still blows the problem is not in the rear of the car.   Disconnect the connector for the front lights under the hood and see if the fuse blows.  If it still blows the problem is in the dash area

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.

Thanks Plumcrazy.  I unplugged the headlight harness & the fuse still blew.  Unplugged the tail harness & the fuse did not blow.  Hopefully I'm on track to figuring this out.  Any suggestions as to the next step?

A383Wing

take all tail and stop light sockets out and remove bulbs....then turn lights on...see if it blows..if not, then start putting bulbs back in until it does blow, then you found problem....don't forget about the license light also

Shredthepow

Thanks A383, I'll try the lights tomorrow.
I am missing the entire license light assembly.  Is it possible that is causing the issue, does the assembly act as a ground?

Nacho-RT74

a wire shorted on rear harness.

license light uses to get ground by chassis. But floating wire around could be making contact ? wire cut without socket or plug ? something to check out.
