Filler neck removal

Are there any tricks to getting the filler neck out of the tank without cutting the grommet?  It's a new grommet but I need to drop the tank again.  And I'm not having having luck just trying to pull it out. 

On a '72.

Grab, twist, curse, pull and eventually it will come out. Try spraying some water/dish washing liquid around it. Worked for me.

it will be easier removing the filler tube if the tank was taken off.

What Bob said. just keep trying too wiggle it back and forth with continuing  pressure up and out.
