What have you been offered?

Most of you have a story about someone offering you $ or whatever for your cars...
Reason I bring this up is late last year I was offered $40 K for my car as is no engine and trans and I told my body guy who passed this offer along to me I was not interested. Well it turns out the guy showed up to his shop last week with $45 K looking for the car. It is no longer there so the guy wanted to come see it and make an offer. My body guy texted me and I didn't see it until this morning. Not going to sell it but was a bit perplexed I guess. Anyone have anything similar happen to them?

Not only that, he just bought a restored 71 Challenger from him last year when he offered the 40K for mine.

Cruisin Grand 2005.  Back then the car had rust spots in the lower quarters, Dutchman, tail panel, faded paint and a shot interior.  Even with all of that some guy in a then-new Mustang GT convertible spent a good half hour looking the car over before he offered to set up a straight trade for both cars.  I love Mustangs so I have to admit I felt a twinge of temptation for at least a second.  I'm glad I didn't bite...

I have been offered 30K by a local business man twice.  I know he has the cash but I can't sell.  I told him that I could only sell it for way more than it's worth so he should look for another one.  He still wants it though.

This thread is a good reminder to say "not for sale" always and not entertain offers.
Either you get a good offer and wreck your brain considering letting your charger go or you get insulted with a bs offer.
Or you have to sit and talk about your car for an hour with a stranger before the guy feels comfy offering you 5k for it.

I was offered $20,000.00 for mine not long after I got it, prior to any restoration work.  I had only paid $7,100.00 so it would have been a good deal, but I didn't want to sell it.

Then after the body and paint was done and I had waaaay more into it, I was offered $8,000.00....

I get asked all the time how much but once a woman driving  a 68 got her check book out and said how much! I wouldnt sell for almost any amount  because the wife would have it spent on new hardwood, new minivan and things like that and there I'd  be.

Ten years ago, I was offered $10,000 cash (it was counted out for me on the hood) for my 1969 Charger White Hat Special in T5/tan top/tan interior.  It was originally a 383-4bbl., console auto with air, but was converted to a 400-2bbl. by a former owner.  It is a project car, needing the bottoms of both quarters and trunk floor replaced from rust, as well as the interior (mice).  Most of the body is strait, with mostly only minor dents and dings to work out of the original sheet metal, with the exception of one crease in a quarter panel that can be replaced during the rust repairs mentioned above.  However, it does run and could be driven short distances as is.  The guy really wanted it to make a GL clone.  I just said "Sorry, not for sale" and handed back his money.  The look on his face was priceless, as he did not expect that to happen.  This one is a keeper, very few WHS were made that year with that engine combo.  Most of the people who have stopped by over the years (to ask about it) are thinking that they can buy it for $500 or so and make a quick buck.  I just tell them that they are 40 years too late...

I get asked "So what's it worth?" more than actual offers, but when it does happen it's been some large sums of money.
I just tell them Not for Sale.

I get the typical, is it for sale question. When I answer no, they say, what would it take? I say make an offer and it ends right there.

People are funny sometimes but questions like is it for sale or what's it worth for the most part are just attempts at conversation.
What collectables are worth is what most people need to know to get a handle on how and what others think.  It's helpful to better understand what they are looking at.  A large diamond for example catches the eye. The question we all want to know right off is what's it worth?  The answer gives a greater understanding about what we are looking at.

A question like --is it for sale?--could many times be nothing more than an  err, umm, etc. ---just conversation--- We all know that everything is for sale.  What an answer to the question --- (not for sale)-- really means is--I don't want to sell--  I like the (make me an offer) as the best answer.

BTW  what's my opinion about all this worth?

These old cars we love never had much if any consideration put into
designing lower lumbar support in the seats.

My fused, instrumented S1-L2 spine just can't handle it.

Back when I had the charger parked in the attached 2 car garage, I would occasionally get a door knocker or have someone stop a car and walk over if I was outside.  Twice I've had people make offers, 15k was probably a decent offer in the guys mind,  but its worth more than that to me, just to look at it, much less drive it, it isn't often to see someone still own their 1st car.  It was more than 10 years ago though, prices were different then.  Car has resided in a detached 2 car garage behind a fence, and most of my neighbors have never seen it before.  Think they'll be surprised when I do bring it out.  

I'd expect offers today to be over 35 if they even want to get my attention, and possibly think about it.  Personally not planning on selling any time soon, but if I cross paths with someone well off I'd be hard pressed to say no, no matter how much I want to drive it myself for a while.   If someone actually laid out 45k in cash in front of me I doubt I could say no...I can buy myself a 2nd youth car if I need to, can even get a nice viper for about the same outlay.

I had a guy ask me what it is worth, I told him it was appraised for 45, and he ask me would i take 45 for it, I said sure. He looked the car for about 30 mins and said he would ask his wife if he could borrow 45 hundred dollars from the bank. I said noooooo! 45 thousand dollars! He made a quick exit.

Mine is the car in the Almost There thread, 68 with 2001 Gen 2 Viper motor and tranny. I've been offered 90k for it, by a guy who has more than enough money. He had 10k to put down right there and would be back with the rest the next day. I respectfully declined.
I have 52 into the build and way more in labor, but all that aside, I am actually driving it now and the pleasure I get from driving it is priceless. I have a price in my head that I would let it go for, a price which would make me do it all over again, and the guy who wants it knows that price. If he eventually meets my price, I would reluctantly let it go and start again, learn from my mistakes and build a better car next time.

A guy did offer 15 though and while that is clearly not enough, is at least more than the average moron offer......
