Fuel Tank Help

My 74 has a 12 gallon fuel cell with a electric pump and a single 1/2 fuel line. I bought the car this way and have used the set up for the past 8 years, but we are tired of stopping for fuel constantly on a long road trip and am now thinking of replacing it with a stock fuel tank, 3/8 lines and putting a mechanical pump back on the motor. I know I will need to get the fuel tank brace, filler neck, straps and new lines. My question is should I put a 74 or 73  tank on? Also should I reinstall the vent lines to a charcoal canister or just vent the tank in the rear of the car like the fuel cell is now? Also should I run a return line system or just the single line like I have now?
Thanks for the advice.

I remember you saying that at Moparfest. Bad enough we have to stop more often anyway, but 12 gallon ... that is like every half hour, no?
But seriously, you will fine (if you are buying new) that the 73 tank is less than the 74.  A few fellows over at the 3rd gen site have done it ... Bob from PA for example with his 74.
As far as the vent lines and canister ... how does it run?  If it is OK now, I'd say no. Don't fix it if it isn't broke. But they were there for a reason and putting the correct tank on my require you to replace them.
I would be interested to hear what some of the other 74 folks have done.   :popcrn:

Bob I was thinking about using the 73 tank, just wanted some opinions before deciding. The only reason I might use the canister is for looks, a friend of mine was stopped around here last summer in his BB 79 Camaro and they checked that all the pollution equipment was there. Kind of got me thinking.

I have a 74 and installed a 73 tank. There is a hitch though. The void in the trunk floor pan will cause trouble when tightening the tank straps. The tank will have a tendency to go into the void. I placed a vinyl 1 x 6 across that area and all was good. I bought a 73 vent assembly for 20 bucks because the 73 tank has the 4 nipples to vent the tank compared to the one on 74. I hooked up the connections to that and the canister line that comes up from the engine compartment I connected to the out on the canister. So far everything is great and I saved 300 bucks. Eventually I will have my old one repaired and go back to that.

Thanks for the info Bob. I think I will go with a 73 tank as well. As I will have to patch the trunk after removing the fuel cell I will figure out a way to make the tank fit right in the 74 void.

On another note Rory, if you do decide to go with a used 74 tank, 75-76 Charger WITH dual exhaust are the same.  Widens the field for your search.
