Hi Guys.
I had a leaking power steering box on my 68 which just got so bad I decided to go for a reconditioned one from a reputable firm.
Fitted new box okay, bleed the system topped up the fluid worked great with no leaks. Took her up the road and back and fine except just a little slow to return out of a corner. I put this down to the extra firm feel I had requested and maybe it needed to bed in . Another mile or so down the road I lost all power assit. I emailed company who have stated it's not the box it's the pump or the pressure valve. Swapped old valve on to new box no change. I've just cracked the pressure hose nut off a quarter to half turn with engine running. I expected to have fluid everywhere being under so much pressure, no just a a slight weep of fluid round the nut.
Before I splash out on a new pump anything I have missed or should try.  :'(

Thanks

not sure if this is any help  ,  I bought a rebuilt steering box from a well known parts place at the time I was doing the resto on mine ,  ( it was NOT any of the steering box specialists I might ad , )  would work perfect , while motor was warming up , soon as it reached operating tempreture , lost all power steering , or when idling  no power assist after 5 minutes  :scratchchin:

** could not send it back because I bought all the parts I needed for the resto before I even started  **  was 3 years before I needed it **** seemed like a good idea at the time :scratchchin: :icon_smile_blackeye:

thought because I had a rebuilt A1 cardon  pump , was prolly that .  thinking this because ,  the box was from a known good supplier that has been going since the 80s .   so  rebuilt the pump my self , still the same  :icon_smile_blackeye:  ,  rebuilt my original pump ,  still the same  , bought a 2nd rebuilt pump  , still same !!  :scratchchin: figuring  pumps cheaper shipping than a box .  , then fitted my original  steering box , that leaked like it was full of holes & was all gummed up & full of rust , worked perfect ,  with all 3 pumps  :yesnod: , fitted the rebuilt box , one more time with all three pumps ,( after I had taken them all apart to clean them out after the debris etc from the original steering box . still the same , worked perfect , till the motor warmed up .  had a look inside the rebuilt one  , swapped the valve over , no different , tried adjusting  the box  , even using  transmission fluid instead of the proper power steering fluid , still the same . fitted  another new  pressure hose  & &  return  hoses  ( I knew it wernt these but changed them just because  :brickwall: , gave up eventually  & went with a   ( firm feel industries power steering box , been perfect ever since  :yesnod: )

might  take the box completely apart sometime  ,

I'm in the UK hence the slow reply but thanks .
I have a steer and gear unit so I doubt if it's the box .I would expect with the pressure hose loose to be oil spurting out, it's about 1000 psi I believe.
Any ideas guys?

Mark where the valve body part on top of box is ! So you can put it back right where it is mounted ,
This is the the pressure adjustment to power steering,
And this valve returns wheels back to straight ahead , ? Do you follow so far
Anyway this valve can be the culprit to power steering woes, I had problems with one box and found this valve to be the problem,
Got a factory manual, it will be a big help with this and how it goes back together  :2thumbs:
