JB400

Looks like factory seat with just a different cover on it.  Could also be out a van.

Ghoste

I thought it looked like something different than a Charger but maybe I'm not looking close enough.  Was curious if it was installed out of convenience or chosen for stunt work?

My understanding of The WB sale to the Charger registry was that they could not be sold. Am I wrong on this?

If you couldn't sell them what else was supposed to happen to them if you didn't want them or you croaked?
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

Whats that seat out of?

I had a 69 Charger that I had bought a few years ago that had the same kind of seats in it and thought they had just been recovered but they were tan and matched the rest of the interior colour
(pic is when I had them in a 67 Coronet)

There was a close up car on the 6th or 7th season that had the same seat covers on the front buckets. It may be the same car!  :Twocents: :shruggy:

1968 Charger (glorified parts car)
Yes, I know I have too many cars. My wife reminds me daily.

Those covers are on several old GLs.  They look to me like probably just stock covers with the front face replaced with plain vinyl.  Probably the way the cars came into WB's hands right off the street in the early 1980s.  These were SoCal cars about 10-15 years old in the early 1980s.

marshallfry01

I'm willing to bet that the seat covers were one of the first things to wear out on the set. Think about it. They prolly climbed in and out of the window 20 times a day. When they slide in and out their feet would always run across the seat. I figure they just recovered them in this cheap vinyl on the set since they would wear out so quickly.

It's just a thought, but it makes sense to me.  :shruggy:

My understanding of The WB sale to the Charger registry was that they could not be sold. Am I wrong on this?

Wayne Wooten from the Charger Registry was the guy that talked Warner Brothers into selling the cars that had been sitting on the back lot since the series ended. It's been a while since I read the article (MCG) but I believe Wayne went out of his way to find buyers that wanted the cars, not to just flip them for a big profit a few months later. So the Charger Registry acted as a broker for WB, finding buyers for the cars. I think WB gave Wayne one car for all his effort and time in arranging this.

If I'm wrong with any of this I'm sure there is a Duke's fan that correct my hazy memory.

On close-up cars?  Yeah, the seats took a beating.  The upper door pads got it bad too.

But the stunt guys typically just got into the 2nd-unit cars through the doors.  They typically weren't on camera until the car was already rolling.

Cool car!!! Would be nice to own a real general. Was watching the dukes on cmt yesterday and it was still as great as it always has been!! Season's one and two are my favorite seasons, it was fresh then and the action and comedy was fresh too!! I have watched the episodes so much in the mid 2000's that I stopped watching them for awhile but lately I will put the dvd back in and watch the early episodes for awhile and catch up on the dukes again and again. Still fun to re-live some of my childhood with the dukes and the general lee still kicks a$$!!!!!

GL#10

This GL  was originally sold to James masters in Alabama , he redid a lot of it , some paint work and the complete interior a freshen up , i believe he had it advertised for $25k .

Each of the 17 cars where sold with a contract ,that must be signed again by the new owners if the GL would change hands , The W.B and TDC did not want people profiting from the cars , ie charging for use or photo's at shows and such .

JR

This car is a reminder of how rough most film production cars actually are.  This car is beat.

But it looked great on 13inch low resolution 1980 TVs.

I'm trying to figure out the taillights. They seem off somehow.  It sort of looks like the 68 tail panel was cut to make the 69 lights fit instead of swapping the panel.
70 Charger RT top bananna /68 Charger RT triple green

Ghoste

Not much in the way of panels then to do a big swap like that.  Much faster and easier to cut and paste (they did the same with the 68 stunt car used in DMCL).

Bandit72

does that say "sand in rear"? If so, that's pretty awesome!  :2thumbs:

Look at the black areas around the top outer edges of the taillights.  There are patches riveted into place over the uncovered areas of the '68 taillight holes.

When the WB guys cut the '69 light holes, they tended to cut along the mounting holes for the '68 lower middle trim piece.  The '69 lights ended up slightly dipped down in the middle.

That blackout panel has also been resprayed with glossy paint since it left WB.

No, it did say "starts in gear "  , WGL57  had the same message scrawled over it as well  , just a heads up to the stuntman driving them .
